Chair Hogs

Just back from Bahamas, Saturday. Actually ran into a couple of chair hogs on the ship~~thought I'd share.

My friend and I wanted to sit together and there were not two chairs beside each other. A kind man offered to move a chair beside of one empty chair so that we could be together. After he was kind enough to go to all that trouble to move the chair, a lady says (about the other chair) "that chair is taken". (Mind you, there was not a towel or anything on it). I said "says who"? People around me starting saying that you can't save chairs. The lady spoke again and said "we have been doing it all week". Anyway, we sat down with no further problems. They were not happy to say the least. I could feel them staring a hole thru us. The gentleman who she was apparently saving it for, did not come back til over an hour later.

You would think a professional chair hogger would at least put something on the empty chair to make it appear "official" that someone was there. That would be the first step for a chair hogger to take to give that illusion of it being used. A wet towel, one flip flop or book would set it up. But to leave it totally empty and still claim it? What is the world of chair hogging coming to?

glad you got your chair. i would have done the same thing. it's one thing to save one and a person show up in a few minutes, but not showing up for an hour??? :confused:

I just had a weird mental picture of a stuffed hog toy sitting on a chair to save it ... maybe I'll have to find one for my cruise :)

My God - this reminded me of a pig I was given one time that pooped chocolate candy - it was without a doubt one of the biggest conversation pieces. I am going to try and find it for my next cruise. And here I thought this was going to be just another chair hog thread. Thanks for the memories.

We are taking our first cruise next month. We do not tolerate chair hogs when we stay in resorts and we will not tolerate them on the ship either.

If you asking how long you can sit, that is not the issue at all. You can sit all day long if you want. When they refer to Chair Hogs - it is people who will put a towel on a chair at 6:00 AM and then not show up until 11:00 AM or go for lunch, then the casino, back to the room and be gone for an hour or longer and expect their chair to be waiting empty for them. The GENERAL rule of thumb is if it is vacant for 30-45 minutes then it SHOULD be up for grabs. No one takes issue if you go in for a swim, go to buffet and grab lunch and come back, run back to cabin to go to the bathroom etc. I say, just be curtious and if you are going to be gone awhile then take your stuff with you. There are great chairs on the upper decks. I tend to leave the ones around the pool for young familes with kids in and out of the pool. I can tan, drink and read anywhere. Besides it is so crowded there.

Love it! We've really only had a problem in the Serenity Area. My mom (about to be 60, lol) thinks it's a fun game now to gather things up and turn them into the lost and found so we can sit together, lol.

Our rule is if we don't see a towel, bag, etc on a chair we consider it fair game. Congrats for standing up to a bully chair hog.

We had FINALLY found 3 chairs that had towels, but no people on a bad section of upper lido deck. I asked the 'neighbors' how long they had been empty... they laughed, no one had been there in the 2 hours they were sitting there, SO, I asked the pool guy if we could have them... he said NOPE... 40 minute rule etc.

SO... being naughty and having time on my side... I waited! LOL Had before mentioned pool boy remove the stuff, and we sat down.

An hour later 3 women showed up and shouted and yelled and 'couldn't believe' I would still steal their stuff! :eek:

 

I did get the seats... but the experience ruined sitting on the deck for me! :(

Dang it, I had a response all typed out, took a phone call, got logged out, and now need to re-do it!

 

Here's my "issue" (not really an issue per se, but couldn't find the right word!)---my husband and I are the type who get up at about 8:30, go get our breakfast trays, and find our deck chairs. We literally stay in the sun for 12-13 hours on days that we are at sea; we intentionally book cruises that have more sea days than port days.

 

Throughout the day, we'll maybe go stick our feet in the pool for a little bit (if there's even room to do that); one will go grab lunch for both of us and bring it back to the deck; I might duck into the air conditioning for 30 minutes or so if I'm not feeling well (results of treatments for breast cancer). Almost always we are the last ones to leave the deck in the early evening. This is cruising to us.

 

Some might see the empty chair and think we're chair hogs, when really we're not. That's what is frustrating---it's so tough to know for sure when to snag a chair and when not to.

 

I have taken a stand before when it's obvious someone is monopolizing chairs. I hate it when someone puts their bag/towel, etc on a chair next to them just so no one else with be beside them!

I forgot to mention the 'stuff' I 'stole' was carnival towels...they knew they were theirs because they had 'tied' them to the chairs. HA... It really was frustrating to me. I just wanted to sit for an hour or so... not cause panic attacks! the "neighbors' actually were very nice and told us to not worry about it. THANKFULLY... they were a saving grace!

That was a great response!!!!! Havent ever had a problem getting a chair, but we usually get up early so we can take a nap later in the day lol yes we are old :) But dont feel old!

When I was on the Splendor, there were 2 men that came out and put towels, books, magazines, etc on about 12 chairs right next to the adult aft pool. PRIME real estate:D Their friends were sporadically coming out, I'm sure, as they were waking up...but at no time were all of those chairs being used. What a bunch of IDIOTS.

Good for you. I just ignore them. They are not worth me getting upset on our cruise.

Good for you! I'm all for keeping your chair if you're going to run to the buffet to get some food, take a dip, or to run to the bathroom. But these people that reserve chairs for hours without actually using them make me mad. Our last cruise we couldn't find a chair to sit in anywhere - not by the pool, not on an upper deck, nowhere. And it was only about 10 am when we showed up. There was a sea of "saved" chairs.

 

I really wish they would enforce the policy of not saving chairs. Last summer we were at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas hanging out by the pool and they had security folks wandering around the pool areas keeping tabs on how long chairs had been saved but empty. They were fantastic about removing towels from chairs that were unoccupied for long periods. They even made a large group free up chairs that they were saving for friends who hadn't been there for a long time. Boy did they pitch a fit, but the funny thing is that their friends never showed the entire time that we were at the pools (hours). Some people are just selfish.

My personal favorite was a group on the old Celebration out of Jacksonville who'd made up these cute little laminated signs with clip art and ribbons and everything. Mom and I went up on the deck, some lady is tying them to the deck chairs. I just stop and wag a thumb at them. "Check it out," I say to my mother. "Aren't they nice?" the lady askes us in her lovely Southern drawl. My mom looks her dead in the eye and says, "You really put a lot of work into those, didn't you?" The lady smiles widely, "Why, yes I did. Thank you for noticing." Mom grins wider. "Yeah, too bad you can't save seats. Is your group somewhere on deck or can I sit there now?"

 

The woman THREW herself across the chairs. Threw herself. Life she was Pete Rose sliding into second. And then she preceded to flail her arms and legs and wail. Luckily, it attracted the attention of the deck captain who thought she was having a seizure. When he surmised she was just having a temper tantrum, he removed her signs and told her the policy. I sincerely hope that deck captain is still working for CCL. And that woman has gotten a grip on her control issues.
