Venice-Hotel-Ship?

Walk a few hundred yard toward the Rialto and take the vaporetta to Piazale Roma (if you do not have too many bags this is doable. Water taxi's as you have discovered are incredably expensive, walking a bit can save hundreds of euro.

I don't know where your hotel is, but the water taxis stop right at the baggage area of the ship. Most water taxis are 90-100 euros wherever you are going within Venice. Is your hotel out of town?

No, near St Marks Sq. Palace Bonvecchiati...

Staying at Palace Bonvecchiati...they are telling me the cost to get to the Ship is 170 Euros:confused: They say the water taxe stop is far from the Ship?

Any other options?

Thanks!

Who is the "they" you are referring to? If it is your hotel, I think they are trying to pull a fast one on you. As Cathy says, the water taxi should not be more than 100 (assuming your party only needs one boat) and they drop you off quite conveniently close to the ship.

Copied and pasted from their email:

- from ship to hotel, with english speaking escorter and porter support, at 170 Euros ( to use public water boat it's too complicate and the water boat dock is quite far from ship stop!)

Did I misunderstand?

Three people...3-4 bags tops.

Tks!

Okay, it sounds to me like they are saying the water boat (vaporetto) is far from the ship, not the water taxi.

However, 170 is too much. Do you need an escorter and porter? I'm sure that's where the extra cost lies....

We are staying at the Hotel Bonvechiatti, not Palace Bonvechiatti. I do know that Hotel Bonvechiatti has it's own water taxi landing. If Palace doesn't, see if they will take your luggage over to Hotel Bonbechiatti and get water taxi from there. You don't need a porter or guide. I think there is some misunderstanding. Ask hotel if other people are taking water taxi to cruise port and see if they want to share.

You can also do it much more inexpensively using Alilaguna. If your hotel is close to St. Mark's, it's perfect. They run a shuttle from the St. Mark's vaporetto stop right to the baggage drop off area for the ship, for about 6 (?) euros/pp. Just wheel your luggage to the boat, and they will help you load it.

http://www.alilaguna.it/index.en.html should give you the info you need. REALLY no need to have a porter accompany you!

When I look on Alilaguna's site it shows the last boat from San marco to the cruise port at about 4:30. Am I missing something? How would we get back to the ship in the evening?

You only need to take the Alilaguna if you're traveling with luggage. For just transportation, the vaporetti are fine. If you plan to use them several times, getting a pass is a good idea as individual trips aren't cheap. (Then again, is anything in Venice??)

Karen Lyn was travelling with luggage. Her hotel is half way between Rialto and St. Mark's. In her situation a private water taxi door to door (possibly shared) is well worth the cost (figure 70-100 Euros) Venice has bridges and the Vaporettos don't want people with 3 pieces of luggage.

For those returning to the ship late, the Alolaguna M line doesn't have a scheduled service after 4:30. I gather some cruise lines do however run a water shuttle service from the terminal to St. marks

In that case, (no luggage) the no 1 or 2 Vaporetto to Piazzal Roma then a land taxi is the easiest way. A few years ago there was a bridge from P. Roma to the cruise terminal. Unfortunately it was closed to make room for the 'People Mover' The 'people mover' cruise terminal stop may be open later this year. Reports are welcome.

The bridge from P.Roma to the port is certainly STILL There. We walked across it a month ago to get to the ship!!!

I was referring to a different bridge which ran directly from p R oma to the terminal. It is now replaced by the people mover.

And just to set the record straight, I was only recommending Alilaguna for transport from the pier to the hotel with luggage--not for getting around Venice as a tourist. I have no idea where the OP's hotel is, other than 'close to St. Mark's' as stated; if it is closer to Rialto then Alilaguna is not such a great option as they only have the one stop. Also, with more than a couple, the water taxi would only be slightly more expensive when you add in luggage charges.

  • 2 weeks later...

Nothing cheap in Venice!

Let me just say I too tried to make my trip cheaper by using public transportation (Aerobus in Barcelona and Allilaguna in Venice). Then reality sunk in and you are standing in the heat and suddenly it all went by the wayside and I decided sometimes cheaper isn't worth it.

I just did this in reverse from ship to hotel and hotel later onto AP. A combo of cruiseline transfers and calling a water taxi and $178 was exactly what it cost point to point with little effort.

I can't imagine that you won't have to haul luggage up and down steps (no ramps) and over bridges. Paid $78 total (USD) for Princess transfer for two of us to board water shuttle from the port to St Marks Square. Included was luggage transfer/delivery to our hotel (also in St Mark's Square) which shows up mid afternoon later. We kept a small light 16 inch luggage that rolls on wheels b/c it held niece's electronics and wanted to make sure those things didn't disappear. It was a pain - all the lifting over steps and bridges and it was hot. I can't imagine having the larger checked luggage and carry on and having to deal with that too.

Calling a water taxi then cost me $100 euro from hotel (Colombina) water landing to the AP the day we left.

So yep, guess I too paid $178 for point to point delivery - everything done for us. No man on this trip (is that sexist?) and while cost very high, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Maybe you can "share" costs with someone and still get the point to point delivery and it be cheaper?
