Car rental vs. taxi tour?

We will be docking in Bridgetown in December where we've been twice before. We have a list of places we would like to visit but wondered whether renting our own car or taking a taxi tour would be the best approach. Has anyone driven from Bridgetown out around the island? How easy is it to navigate the traffic? Has anyone had problems going the taxi route?

I would suggest that you determine your priorities before making a decision about taking a taxi or renting a car. Barbados is a beautiful island to explore on your own and the driving is fairly easy. There can be traffic up and down the west coast roads and Bridgetown so be sure to leave a good bit of extra time when returning to the ship.

That said - if you have much that you want to do it will be much easier and less stressful with a driver in that you will not have to worry about getting lost. You'll be able to get more done but you'll pay a decent amount for the service.

I would go with a taxi. I just think it's a lot easier and far less to worry about.

Keith is probably right.

Do the taxi thing rather than try driving on the left/wrong side of the road

on narrow roads with not-great road markings and indeterminate edges in many spots. :)

IF you're a well-coordinated driver, and if you've driven in England

you might make out OK

but otherwise you're probably better off with a taxi driver who knows this wacky road system

where all main roads radiate out of Bridgetown

(but there are connecting cross-roads,where gullies allow them..)
