jtl513 Posted July 4, 2010 #2 Share Posted July 4, 2010 You can get a rough idea by looking at the light-blue "Under Construction" periods shown CLICK HERE Then to pin down the dates more exactly you have to go and Find Cruises for a specific ship and determine what the hole in the scheduled sailing dates is. If that fails, then ask DutchByAssociation on his thread on this forum, http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=921874 or on his blog. http://dutchbyassociation.blogspot.com/

Randyk47 Posted August 2, 2010 #11 Share Posted August 2, 2010 We're back into the cruise planning mode and really looking at the Maasdam in late March 2011. Looks like there's one cruise, maybe two, before she goes into dry dock in mid April. Our preference with HAL are the S and R class ships and we've never been on the Maasdam. Between adding a new S ship to our list we really like the itinerary. Should we be concerned about her condition or the fact she'll be going into dry lock soon or rig th after our cruise? We were on the Veendam on her last Caribbean cruise before repositioning to Europe a few years ago and it seemed to us that the crew got more focused on the upcoming transit than the cruise at hand. Our other choice is the Noordam but we're not fans of the Vista ships, though that doesn't mean they're bad, and the itinerary is exactly our honeymoon itinerary of 13 years ago. Krazy Kruizers Posted August 2, 2010 #12 Share Posted August 2, 2010 I am one who is always leary of being on a ship before it goes into dry dock. I am not saying that this couldn't happen -- but the crew could be concentraing on getting ready for the dry dock as the Maasdam will be getting the new Mix lounge along with a lot of other updates like carpeting, furniture, etc.
Randyk47 Posted August 2, 2010 #13 Share Posted August 2, 2010 KK - Thanks. Appreciate your feedback....I've got kind of the same thing in the back of my mind but the itinerary just keeps "sucking" us in. Decisions, decisions!:D
cle1 Posted August 2, 2010 #14 Share Posted August 2, 2010 I noticed that the S class ships Retreat pool, is being put on hold. What about the Lanai cabins? Will they put in the new bars, Mix, Champagne, etc. when these ships go into dry dock? Do you think the R class ships will get a Retreat Pool, and Lanai cabins? I'm inclined to think Maasdam isn't getting Lanai cabins. You can book cruises after the refit, and the options listed on the website for cabin types are the same as before the refit. Also, there is only one set of deck plans. (I checked last week because we're thinking about a Maasdam cruise next year) I remember when we were planning our Veendam cruise to Bermuda, it was before the refit, and the website had two sets of deck plans. Rami077 Posted August 2, 2010 #16 Share Posted August 2, 2010 I didn't notice the Veendam on the dry dock list. I have read many negatives about the air conditioniong in the cabins. We are considering a South American cruise on the Veendam. Any news on the air conditioning? Has it been fixed?

We are considering a South American cruise on the Veendam. Any news on the air conditioning? Has it been fixed? Veendam had a drydock fairly recently. That's when they did the Lanai conversions, added aft cabins, and put in the Footbath. I wonder if the AC problems on Veendam are related to the cabin changes. Not so much the Lanais--on our June cruise, I rarely saw the doors open, and those cabins always existed. But adding all those aft cabins added a lot of new ductwork, which might have unbalanced the way the AC is set up. I know that when office walls and cubes get moved around in a large office space, the AC can get uneven because it was designed for one flow pattern, and the moved walls change the flow. Just a stray thought.

We are considering a South American cruise on the Veendam. Any news on the air conditioning? Has it been fixed? The Veendam was the first ship to go through the extensive dry -- April 2009. She was originally to be back in service April 27 but because there were so many problems she didn't set sail until May 1. Even after she sailed there were still work crews on doing a lot of work on the retreat and other places. When all the aft cabins were added -- this just meant that the air coniditioning had to be stretched to get to those cabins. In order for the air conditioning to be fixed properly -- the ship would have to go in for an extensive dry dock -- there are a lot of vents and electrical work that would have to be done to upgrade the air conditioning system. Can't be done in a short dry dock. She is not shceduled for another dry dock for at least 3 or 4 years.

Ryndam and Statendam have gone in dry-dock for their SOE part dieux, phase dieux upgrades, yet did not get Lanai cabins so..................maybe in phase troix;) We'll see in APR next year when Maasdam goes under the knive They did, however, get Mix and Showroom at Sea, both of which have apparently proved quite popular. Talk had it on Statendam that there are plans to expand the the "Showroom at Sea" concept to all fifteen dam ships! "Mix" might just follow where physically possible, the other R class ships come to mind Retreat pools on the "R" class ships? Already exists on Rotterdam but too many "issues" right now with the entire concept and has, apparently, been placed on hold

We are booked on the Noordam for a mid-September Mediterranean cruise and hoping we won't have to make any changes to our plans. Thanks. Nevadagal Hi Nevadagal, Noordam just recently finished her dry-dock after her Football (Soccer) World Cup charter in South Africa was cancelled. Instead, she roamed around the Med and Eastern Atlantic, off Spain and English Channel for a while, before going into dry-dock for standard maintenance a month ago, on 1 JUL at Blohm + Voss in Hamburg, Germany, and emerged on 11 JUL with three additional interior cabins. She's done for a while;)

Sometimes when you "stretch" the AC, you don't get enough air flow/cooling to all places.

Should we be concerned about her condition or the fact she'll be going into dry lock soon or rig th after our cruise? I was on the Veendam a very few weeks before her '09 drydock, and was on the Rotterdam on the cruise immediately before her '09 drydock. In neither case did I sense that my cruise was being "looked past" because of the upcoming work. On the Rotterdam cruise there was not a hint of it until the last night, when preparations were apparent when I came out of dinner. On both cruises the ship was in cruise-worthy condition. I would sail a pre-drydock cruise again with no hesitation.

Try again! Veendam arrived at Freeport on 28 March 2009 after a transit without passengers from Tampa, Fl. Demo work on her started, but she did not enter dry-dock until 2 April 2009, from which she emerged on 1 May 2009. She was scheduled to be out of service for 35 days. Last time I checked, 35 days beginning on 28 MAR is the first of MAY
