SS passengers' choice for European River Cruise

SilverSea is a different sort of cruise line with a different sort of passenger than the mass-market lines.

 

After trying SilverSea, I don't really want to cruise any other way, but I would like to cruise the rivers of Europe.

 

Is there a comparable cruise line to SilverSea that does this?

 

My agent recommended AMA and Viking. I've looked at the Cruise Critic reviews of these but wanted feedback from SilverSea clients.

 

I understand it is a different style of cruising, much less formal, more active and I'm actually looking forward to this different style of cruise. But since the cabins and the ships are so small, I'd like to choose a line with best reviews from SilverSea clients since they'll know what I'm used to and like.

 

(Note though, unlike most SilverSea clients, we don't drink so quality of wine served isn't an issue!)

We took a Viking cruise two years ago and were very disappointed. Every other boat we saw was newer and better-maintained. And as for service and food, it was worlds apart. Never again.

Several years ago we went down the Danube River on The River Cloud. We booked it thru A&K. It was a spectacular trip. The boat was pristine, the excursions were well managed and very interesting. Our A & K guide was lively and very well informed. Hope it works out for you.

We are looking at a river cruise for next year, and our TA has strongly recommended AMA. We normally cruise on Regent, but have our 1st SS cruise scheduled for January. Our TA knows are likes/dislikes and has sailed on AMA, so I am comfortable with her recommendation.

No question the closest to SS is Tauck. When we did AMS-BUD there were many experienced SS cruisers on board and we all loved it. I can't believe your TA recommended Viking:(.

Sorry,for the river cruises with Tauck look at the "MS Swiss Jewel", MS Swiss Sapphire" or MS Swiss Emerald". You will enjoy any of them.

Le Boreal is owned by the French shipping compagnie de ponant.

 

It is a stunning yacht, we just came of her in May this year, for the Monte Carlo GP. Spectacular modern ship, shame the 5* treatment stops there!

 

Unfortunately, the staff were not up to standard, and I've been spoiled by other lines!

Thank you for the recommendation for Tauck. I've requested a brochure. Once I know that's the line I want, I'll talk to the travel agent. She is usually very good so I'm surprised she didn't mention Tauck.

If you go to the Tauck River Cruising web site there is a video well worth watching. It was filmed on our cruise and has an appearance by yours truly. Uncompensated I might add.

I too was looking for a silversea/seabourn type of cruise on the Nile.

I posted on the Specialist cruise / River cruise section on CC and got some fantastic advice. Might be worth a look.

The Tauck Tours come highly recommended with the kind CC members there.
