10 Day Weather Forecasts

I put this on my Princess roll call, but I thought it may be useful to others heading to Alaska.

I created some links below from www.weather.com to show the 10 day forecasts for the cities we'll be visiting. I thought these could be helpful, as we get closer to our departure dates, in giving everyone a pretty good idea of the likely weather we'll be facing.

I just got back from Alaska on NCL and can tell you it's COLD there right now. The tour guides said they had some unusually warm weather last year but not this year. The only use I got out of my capris and short-sleeved shirts was in Seattle, during their heat wave. If I were planning a trip to Alaska in the next few weeks, I'd pack mostly warm layers for time ashore and bring a heavy coat and gloves.

At the moment (8:06pm) it's 76 in Carcross and 58 in Skagway. It probably hit 85 in Carcross this afternoon - I don't know what Skagway's high was but it was way above COLD :D

The advice to dress in layers when you travel in Alaska is solid advice. When we were there only a month ago, the temperatures on the land portion of the trip were above average and we had seventy plus degree temperatures when we were in Fairbanks. On the cruise itself, the temperatures were more moderate but in no case could they have been described as COLD by objective standards. In Vancouver the weather was quite warm and sunny.

You need to be prepared to add or subtract layers of clothing to adjust for the variety of temperatures and weather conditions you might encounter. Any reasonable amount of research should tell you that weather can be quite variable and when you are talking about a region as vast as Alaska, you can't expect the same weather in one part of the state that is present in another.

My 2 cents for those going, DON'T look it might only make you depressed. I started looking two weeks out and almost always saw cloudy with chance of showers. A week out I'd look at the bridge cams of the various ships in port and in general it was true to the forecast of the day, and what was my forecast for the next week, cloudy with 60% of showers.

What did I get? Pretty much partly cloudt to sunny.. YMMV. Pack for the worst hope for the best.

I agree with Yukon, weather forcasts for northern British Columbia and SE Alaska are good for about 48 hrs max, however right now there is a huge high pressure ridge protecting the region and providing warm temps.
