What to do in Koper

Yes we did. Go back up the page to post 45.

Your pictures are beautiful. I saw pictures of a regular beach in Portoroz not the concrete sprinkled with sand type that I have also seen pictures of. Did you go right to the resort area in Portoroz?

We got off the bus at the begining of the beach area and walked along the walkway. There was a regular beach but most of the water front was a concrete walkway with sand on the otherside. There were piers out into the water for sunbathing and ladders into the water. It was the end of Sept so there were no beach chairs out.

Thanks so much. Now I get it. From the pitures on one of the Portoroz websites I thought that it was a beach that lead straight into the water.

Do you think on a nice hot summer's day that this would be a good place to take teenagers after touring Piran? Do you have another suggestions?

There is a small beach that leads right into the water but most of the area is the concrete walkway. Personally I think teenagers would rather go swimming off the rocks in Piran where there are ladders. However if you have teens who like laying in the sun on a beach Portoroz may be better.

There are some beach front cafes along the concrete walkway in Portoroz. That might be nice for lunch. I don't know how crowded it will be in summer since this is a hot spot for tourists.

We are getting ready for our first visit to the Croatian Coast, including Kotor on Monday, June 13 from 7 am to 4 pm. We will be tendered and plan to be up early to see the "sail-in" to this dramatically positioned, fjord-like port stop. We are considering three different ship tour, all fairly reasonable in pricing. Would like to some feed-back on these three options:

#1: Driving up to Njegusi, with a panoramic view of the Bay of Kotor, Old Royal Capital of Cetinje, photo stops en route to Budva and then seeing this historic coastal, medieval fortified town, finishing with a panoramic sightseeing walk through the old town of Kotor; 7 hours, $76.75

#2: Driving up to Njegusi, with a panoramic view of the Bay of Kotor, village of Njegusi, Royal Capital of Cetinje, sightseeing walk through the old town of Kotor; No Budva coastal visit; 5 hours, 45 minutes, $50.75

#3: Driving 55-minute drive along the Adriatic coastal route seeing the town of Budva, reaching the 15th century settlement, now a worldwide recognized hotel resort of Sveti Stefan; shopping time in Kotor at the end; four hours, $38.75

Three interesting and good stops for sights, lots of pictures, etc. What have you seen and done in this area? What did you love the most, hear great things about?

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

We arrive in Kotor on Nov. 11 and depart on Nov. 12 at 6 in the morning. According to the itinerary we are tendered in and then docked on the 12th. Great information here. We do not prepay tours, so did anyone use another service besides Graeme Chuter?? I checked the tours for our ship and none go to Lake Bled or Ljubljana. The tours on our ship are more than what 5326jan posted! We are looking for a tour with for a group of 8 to 15.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Onthebalcony,

I think you are referring to Kotor, Montenegro and we are going to Koper, Slovenia. It's happened before, the names are very close!:)

Hi,

You are right! I do want Kotor, Montenegro!! But some of the info is from Kotor below.

I guess I will start a new thread so Kotor is in the same place!

Thanks!

Maybe you can go to TLCOHIO's posts and find out if he got good information. I believe they have recently returned from the Solstice Med cruise. Here is their roll call, you may find good info on some of your ports there. I think there is a "after cruise" post that may wrap it up if you go to the last page. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1189036

Oops, Terry is the name... maybe he/maybe she. It's an androgynous name. :o

From looking at the previous posts on this thread, almost everyone recommended Graeme for the private tour for Ljubljana and Lake Bled, however, when I e-mailed Graeme, I was told he is occupied on the date we want already. We were a bit disappointed. So, we want to know if anyone has any other private tour guides or companies to recommend for the Ljubljana and Lake Bled tour, or if we want to go by ourselves, what kind of transportation can we take? Thanks!

just curious, what date/ship are you going to Koper? Did you ask Graeme to recommend anyone since his company can't do the tour?

Hi, 5326jan, we are planning to go on the Voyager of the Seas which will dock in Koper on Oct 09 this year. Actually I did ask him for any other recommendations and that is his answer:

'I am sorry but I would rather not make any recommendations for alternative providers because I cannot vouch 100% for their quality and reliability. I did this once before and it backfired on me and the clients were not happy with me. I hope you understand my predicament.'

I do understand his situation, that's why I try to ask if anyone can give me any other recommendations.

Hi, we just got back. Graeme was great and Slovenia was fabulous! If you haven't found a guide yet, maybe you would be able to rent a car and DIY. The roads were perfect... like driving in Anywhere, USA! There was a toll road, so have Euros, but that was the only "extra" about driving there. Lake Bled was about 2 1/4 hrs from port and Lj half the distance. The castle at Lake Bled was worth the 8E entry fees and the views were beautiful Our only problem with the time in port in Koper was that there wasn't enough time there! My DH and I would love to go back for a week. It's beautiful!

In May and June of 2011 we cruised with Oceania on the Nautica. One of our last ports was Koper, Slovenia. We normally go off on our own, hiring local guides rather than ship tours. Koper was one of the more difficult stops in finding guides that actually responded to e-mail, but we finally found Matjaz and Nina of Autentica (info@autentica.si). Most of our shipmates who stayed in town or went on the ship's tours were disappointed in this port of call, but we had a wonderful day. We would say it was one of our favorite ports, but with an itinerary of Istanbul, Kusadasi, Kotor, Dubrovnik and Venice that would be a stretch. During the day some of the highlights Nina showed us were Hrastovlje Village and the walled Roman Church of the Holy Trinity. The fresco's in this church were amazing particulary Danse Macabre (or Dance of Death). The church is a must for any tour of the area. We also stopped at a local winery, tasting Refosk, Malvazija and Cabernet Sauvignon. They also served us excellent Slovene cold cuts (prosciutto, house salami, cheese, olives, olive oil and home made bread) to round up our tasting. Our final stop was to the Secovlje Salina Nature Park and the ancient salt-pans. We loved Slovenia and hope to return and see more of this beautiful country.

Hello all... I live in Slovenia, Ljubljana, so I can help you with some info if you need them.

Somebody was asking about Lipica, where the white Lipizzaners come from. It's a nice trip, around 30 min drive from Koper, they have a heard of around 400 horses and also riding school performing (similar to the famous one in Vienna). The place is from 16. century, has some great stallions there you can see. So if u like horses, that's the place to visit.

Slovenia is small, from one end to another, u need aprox. 2h drive. Ljubljana is in the middle, higway all the way from Koper to Ljubljana, so drive is fast. Very old town, with castle in the middle. Ppl lived here since 2000 bc, it was a swamp and houses were on sticks. Also it was roman city, so you can find some ruins. Sunday afternoon is nice, walking by the river, having coffee and so on.

Bled is another 30 min from Ljubljana, also higway, so fast trip. Lake with it's island, and castle is really nice. Also one thing you can see is Postojna cave, very nice, you go in with a train and than walk around stalactites.

And for Terry from Ohio, If you like some art, go for Italia, Ravena is nice, but I'm not sure what to see in Opatija. It's just a coastal city, with hotels and beach, but if you like that, see here is very warm, up to 80s in summer and water is clean, no sharks or anything, so go swimm if u like that :) Dubrovnik and Split is a must see. Hvar and Korcula are islands, with turists and old towns, if u like that, u'll enjoy wandering around, having icecream and buying souvenirs.

Oh, something about Piran and Portoroz. Well Piran has a nice church with a nice view, and some walls around, old part with narrow streets and has a charm, but Portoroz is more turist place, with hotels and casinos and beach. So if u like some walking and just enjoy sun, that's a place to go, you can easy walk from Piran to Portoroz by the water, it's leveled and nice, but not short. :)

Slovenia only has 42 km (26 m) of coast, but it's nice and water very warm so we go there alot, just for fun. Also, if the day is sunny, you can see Alps, they are just an hour away from Koper, Soca valley with green river Soca... :)

Oh yes, and cruise ships are new addition to Koper, they are trying their best to offer as much as they can.

If there are any more info I can help, just ask ;)

hello, guess you would be perfect person to ask for infor...i will be arrive on cruise ship in september,,,is there local bus to take me to Ljubljani,,,and local bus to take me to the postojane caves...

how long is the trip from the port for these places,,,all infor.would be very much appreciated....
