What to do in Koper

Recommended Posts

Walk by coast is around one hour one way, but very nice. Hope u'll like it here ;) In Portoroz, there is a great icecream in a shop named Mignon, close to beach, by the main road.

loty,

This is very doable! Thank you for the information. We look forward to our visit (only 6 weeks away!). :)

Hello Loty,

What do you suggest is the best way to get to Koper from Brnik airport. We get to the airport around 4pm and have to board the MS Arion about 8pm. Taxi, bus,or maybe the train from the town centre,I just hope there is enough time !

Thanks

Brett

Hello all... I live in Slovenia, Ljubljana, so I can help you with some info if you need them.

Slovenia is small, from one end to another, u need aprox. 2h drive. Ljubljana is in the middle, higway all the way from Koper to Ljubljana, so drive is fast. Very old town, with castle in the middle. Ppl lived here since 2000 bc, it was a swamp and houses were on sticks. Also it was roman Oh, something about Piran and Portoroz. Well Piran has a nice church with a nice view, and some walls around, old part with narrow streets and has a charm, but Portoroz is more turist place, with hotels and casinos and beach. So if u like some walking and just enjoy sun, that's a place to go, you can easy walk from Piran to Portoroz by the water, it's leveled and nice, but not short. :)

If there are any more info I can help, just ask ;)

Dober dan, Loty--

Can you recommend any spas in the Koper/Piran/Portoroz area? We'll be arriving in Koper on a cruise ship for just one day in November and would like to see Piran, then go to a spa, and then maybe go to a winery. :D Does that sound possible using either taxi or the bus system?

Hvala lepa!

Susan :)

Loty,

I hope you can help us. We will be arriving in Koper on a Wednesday in September for a one day visit (0700 to 1700) and would like to see the Skocjan Caves regional park. But we can't figure out how to get there from Koper. Is there bus service? Organized tours? Private cab? Any help you can give us will be very appreciated.

Toni

Does anyone remember if the road between Koper and either a trip to Ljubljana or Piran was pretty flat or mountainous and cliffy. From the pictures it looks pretty flat, but I was wondering about that ? Thanks

Can't remember Ljubljana - although it doesn't ring any bells in terms of being hair raising - unlike the trip we did from Kotor in Montenegro which was very tortuous, steep and had loads of hairpin bends. I have a feeling it was a good road through the hills, but not mountainous. Koper to Piran is pretty flat along the promontary - I seem to remember the approach to Portoroz (on the way to Piran) we were elevated as we could look down on the coastline/town and we zig-zagged down to sea level but it was fairly sedate.

How expensive would the taxi ride be from Koper to Piran? Do the taxis do hourly tours?

Just got back from our Med cruise and had an amazing day from Koper going to Ljubljana and Lake Bled...had a wonderful private tour guide (if you'd like his name, just ask...I don't think I can post it without a request) who made our day particularly special. Slovenia turned out to be the most pleasant surprise of the cruise itinerary...what a beautiful country and delightful people. We had a wonderful lunch at a local restaurant and, after sampling the blueberry schnapps just had to take a bottle home! A lovely, lovely day.

Our guide was an Englishman, Graeme Chuter, who is married to a Slovenian woman and together they run a small travel agency/tour guide service. Graeme has an 8 passenger van (very comfortable) and he's both knowledgeable and a savvy guide. He picked us up promptly at the port and we stopped first at Ljubljana, took a walking tour around town and visited the open market. Then we drove to Lake Bled and visited the castle (I won't give too many details except to say it was one of the loveliest spots I've ever seen) and then went to a local restaurant for lunch. (and, because we loved the schnapps so much, Graeme negotiated for us to buy a couple of bottles from the restaurant owner, who blends his own) After that, we strolled around the lake a bit before heading back to Koper (we even had time after arrival to take a quick walk around town on our own) Chatting with Graeme gave us a real sense of life in Slovenia and we could certainly understand his attachment to the country. Graeme's contact info is on his website at http://www.4seasonstravelslovenia.com

p.s. had a bit of the schnapps tonight...truly yummy!

Did Graeme require a deposit in advance? If so, do you mind my asking how much and how you were able to do it? Thanks!

Yes, Graeme does require a deposit, easily paid through paypal (and he has a cancelation refund policy too.) The amount will probably depend upon the itinerary you choose. I paid with a bit of trepidation, but Graeme was so prompt in responding to my questions (and he had been recommended by others here on cruise critic, so I felt he had a bit of a good track record) that I went ahead. It worked out perfectly.

We're not going until Sept 2011, but I always like to get my ducks in a row early. Just wondering how far you put a deposit down and how much of a dep. did he require. Do you know how big or small of a group he takes? Thank you so much for the info!

We booked a few months in advance. He has an 8 passenger van and it was a flat rate for him and his van for the day. We started out with just four of us, but three others whom we met on our cruise asked if they could join us so we ended up with seven (and a smaller cost per person as a result) I hesitate to quote a price because so much will depend on itinerary (and prices this year may not be the same as prices next year) I would encourage you to contact Graeme and see what he can offer.

We just came back from a cruise stopping at Koper. Instead of paying huge amount of shore excursion money for Lake Bled or Ljubljana, we chose to rent a car and went to Skojcan caves. It is an UNESCO site and due to the fact that people can only reach the site by car, it is relatively quiet. The caves were very impressive!!! The driving was easy, and that tours in both English and other languages ( German/French etc) were run every hour. You need to be fairly fit to walk the 90 minutes and the 500 steps inside the caves. It was definitely worth while to check this out.

We just returned from Koper. We took the city bus to Piran. Very easy . Just ask anyone to direct you to the bus stop and which bus to get on. I think it was 3.10 Euros...cheap...no need for a tour. Piran is a very quaint, neat city to see. Tartini Square, St George church, A little chocolate shop, Very pretty seaside. It took about 20-30 minutes to get there and we spent maybe two hours there. I'm glad we went.

Here is what we did in Koper Slovenia. The lady at the information desk on the ship gave us a map and directions to get to the bus to Piran. We wandered all around but couldn’t find the bus stop so we asked several people on the street and they either couldn’t speak English or didn’t know. We finally found an IT and were given the right directions and found the bus. All you need to do is follow the road to your right along the water until you pass the marina. There you will pass a food market and see a traffic circle. At the corner take a right and the bus stop is right there. You can buy your ticket in the stall at the bus stop. The bus was 3.10 euro to Piran and it was a pretty trip which took about 40 minutes. Piran was very quaint. We walked up to the church then continued up to the city wall. The view from the walls was spectacular. We next walked around the water promenade. We took the local bus, one euro, to Protoroz and walked along their water front which was mostly concrete beach with a little sand here and there before taking the bus back to Koper. We walked around the water back to the ship passing a small rocky beach and playground on the way.

This is Piran.

I have a cruise booked for next year and was wondering what is there to do in Koper?

As others have suggested, I would certainly recommend a tour of Lake Bled and Ljubljana. The scenery is beautiful.

Thanks for sharing, we'll be on an Adriatic Sea Coastal Cruise next October and the scenery looks spectacular in Lake Bled. Definitely a consideration!

Hey guys, sorry for very late answer, but i've got a job onboard one of the big cruise ships and i'm spending my time in away from cold Ljubljana at the moment... If any of you has any question about SLo and Lj, I will be happy to answer, just drop me a message...

For SPA in Koper/ well there is Kempinsky hotel in Portoroz, and also 5* hotels called Lifeclass and they have very nice and very huge Spa center there...

For Skocjanske Jame, great caves, I guess u can check with your cruise if they have organized excursion, it's like 20 min ride on higway onway...

Road to LJ from Koper is highway, u need just under one hour to get to Lj and it goes little up and down... but no major hills, alps are on the north side of the country...

Most of the shops in Lj are open sunday atleast untill 3pm, I'm not sure for old part of the city, but I know that there is flee market and all the coffee places are open all the time...

Any other questions, just drop a line, and I will try to follow this more often, satelite internet is sometimes paiiin :P

have a nice day and greetings from Caribbean sea, where i'm searching for Jack Sparrow ;)

This is a great thread with lot's of information on a port that is not visited that often from what I can see.

I did not see a post on here about anyone visiting Piran and the beach resort area of Portoroz. Has anyone combined these two?
