Hawiidoll Posted August 10, 2010 #1 Share Posted August 10, 2010 anybody going from Heathrow to Dover on Sept. 5 to meet Crystal Cruise? Any suggestions on transfers?
Rare Keith1010 Posted August 10, 2010 #2 Share Posted August 10, 2010 You certainly have a variety of options. We have used Woodford Chauffeurs from time to to time when we didn't have the Crystal Cruises transfers and found them to be quite good offering a very competitive price. Here is their web site. http://www.woodfordchauffeurcars.co.uk/ You can e mail them with questions and Cheryl will e mail you back with the answers. Keith Woodford are a fine company but to suggest they are competitively priced is stretching it. Woodford have been discussed on many threads this year prompted by people posting almost identically worded statements to the one above. When prices have been discussed Woodford are normally found to be typically 40% more than reliable local companies near Dover and Southampton other cruisers have used. There are plenty of threads where much cheaper and just as reliable companies have been put forward. Just scan down the list of posts, you have asked one of the most popular questions on this board. As they say isn't it wonderful there is choice. We have been very pleased with them and have recommended them to others and they have also been pleased with them. Yes, we found them competively priced. Isn't choice nice and if someone has another suggestion wouldn't it be nice if they posted a constructive suggestion such as the name of a service rather than putting down a post from someone who took the time to respond to the OP. And the OP is beginning their transfer at the airport. Thank you very much. Keith
Sammy1 Posted August 10, 2010 #5 Share Posted August 10, 2010 anybody going from Heathrow to Dover on Sept. 5 to meet Crystal Cruise?Any suggestions on transfers? If you're looking for people on your specific cruise, you should check with your Roll Call. Otherwise, I can advise who we used for our transfer to Dover to catch an NCL Sun cruise in June. I discussed this on a previous thread...we used Dover Heritage Taxi...and they are very competitively priced! Furthermore, our driver was excellent, we had a very modern and comfortable vehicle, and Karen also responded very quickly to any queries. And, what I particularly liked is that they do not require a deposit. Their website is: http://www.dovertaxis.com/ Good luck! Sam

Rare insidecabin Posted August 10, 2010 #8 Share Posted August 10, 2010 Dover and Southampton firms will happily pick up from airports and will be typicaly cheaper that the central london serices. A price from a London firm £126 http://www.airport-pickups-london.com/default.asp here are a few dover firms with web sites where you can sk for a quote Note in the UK there are "taxis" and "private hire" firms they are different. http://www.dovertaxis.com/index.php http://www.centralexectravel.co.uk/ http://www.speedyconnectionstravelservices.com/index.php and more http://www.dover.gov.uk/welcome/getting_around.aspx#taxi Another option is to do a 1 way car hire National do these from £50 and the dover drop off is just outside the dock gates. http://www.nationalcar.co.uk/Hotdeals/630/uk/zluk_airportconnect
DorneyBoy Posted August 11, 2010 #9 Share Posted August 11, 2010 Yes, we found them competively priced. As handfordr says, we've been through this loop quite regularly in the last year with Woodford on this board regards price. Woodford seem to have fanatically loyal customers who make posts that often read like adverts - but they all seem to be in denial that Woodford is very expensive whatever their other merits. The link below is typical of the sometime heated exchanges between diehard Woodford people and 'local experts' + people who choose cheaper alternatives that have served them well. http://cruiseforums.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1160818

The link below is typical of the sometime heated exchanges between diehard Woodford people and 'local experts' + people who choose cheaper alternatives that have served them well. http://cruiseforums.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1160818 I think you have my intentions all wrong. I am just someone who has used some of the car services over in England and happened to have had several good experiences with Woodford and each time I priced them I found them very competitive. I would not read into my post. It's analagous to when I post to the Italy cruise board about having a very nice experience with Rome Walks. Our experience with them was great, the prices was competitive and I appreciated there responsiveness on e mail. In both cases I have recommended them to others. I can also list many others around the world where if I have a good experieince I would list them. On the other hand, there are some where the experience was not good and I note that as well. I truly try to avoid getting into heated exchanges because I find it doesn't do anything and most people recognize that my posts tend to be very tactful. I don't post on this board all that often but like anything in life you will rarely get consensus on almost any item. However, one should always feel that they can give their recommendation on any board. And in this case I did find them to be competitive, reliable and timely in their communcations. I have recommended them to others and the others people had the same impression. If others want to use someone else trust me I do not take any of this personally. But if someone does say something favorable about a company that does say a lot about the company unless they work for them or have friends who work for or with them. This is not the case. I am just a tourist who has used them along with others in the London area and was quite pleased with them. Keith

Rare Hlitner Posted August 17, 2010 #13 Share Posted August 17, 2010 We generally just rent a car when we go from Heathrow (or Gatwick) to one of the ports. Several companies have decent one-way rates and the rental car offices in Dover are relatively close to the port. On several ocassions we have simply dropped our car (usually Hertz) and somebody from the agency has run us over to the port in the same car (this saves the hassle of moving luggage). Hank Agree with Hank that a rental car could be an option worth consideration. Don't know if it's too late, but in 2008 when departing from Dover on Crystal, we got into England early and spent time in the Kent area south of London, seeing all of the historic homes (Churchill, Kipling, etc.), old castles, great gardens, etc., in and around Royal Tunbridge Wells. That also allows time to adjust from the time zone changes, jet lag, etc. THANKS! Enjoy! Rare Keith1010 Posted August 18, 2010 #15 Share Posted August 18, 2010 Terry/Hank your recommendation is excellent for some and renting a car works for some folks, At the same time it may not be a good alternative for others given the length of the drive and also that if you are from the USA as the OP is that you are driving on the opposite side of the road. If you are just arriving that day, don't want to drive a long distance, are not used to driving in England, and want to just get over to the ship other methods of transporation might be more desirable.
