Carol From California Posted August 13, 2010 #1 Share Posted August 13, 2010 Does anyone know if Regent blocks the use of "Magic Jack"? I am bringing my laptop and read on the boards that it will work to make calls home to the US, unless it is blocked by Regent. Has anyone used it? Travelcat2 Posted August 13, 2010 #2 Share Posted August 13, 2010 While I am not familiar with Magic Jack, I would think that calls would have to go through Regent's signal since you are in the middle of the ocean somewhere. Is Magic Jack the thing that was advertised on television a year or so ago:confused: If so, does it really work?
Mark_T Posted August 13, 2010 #3 Share Posted August 13, 2010 It works via the Internet so it won't involve the usual phone charges, just. Internet fees. I can't comment about shipboard use but in general they work fine, I use mine all over the world.
orchestrapal Posted August 13, 2010 #4 Share Posted August 13, 2010 "MagicJack reportedly will NOT work with Satellite based Internet connections". This quote taken from a review page of the item. Ships do have Satellite based Internet service so it probably will not work on a ship.
cb traveler Posted August 13, 2010 #5 Share Posted August 13, 2010 I have used Magic Jack on board Regent. It DOES work. You will use internet time for your calls, but you will by pass Regent's phone system by plugging in the room phone to the MJ device. Works just fine. You might also consider SKYPE for free calling computer to computer with another SKYPE user or "dialing" a phone number while connected to the internet. Either method requires connecting to the internet and paying whatever internet charges may occur. I've used both while on board and have been very successful making calls. cb
Carol From California Posted August 14, 2010 Author #6 Share Posted August 14, 2010 Thanks! I know how it works (through Internet) and I planned on using it at hotels prior to cruise but I was told that Regent blocks the use of Magic Jack on the ship. Glad to know it worked for you. I will bring it and see if it works for me.
