Anything to do in Genoa

Will be docking in Genoa for one day. Is there anything to do in Genoa? Is it within walking distance? Or is it best to book a tour with Celebrity Cruise? What is nearby for sightseeing? Portofino???

There is a great deal to see and do in Genoa, with the added attraction of being walkable from the cruise port. It couldn't be easier. You can read more about Genoa here: http://turismo.comune.genova.it/spip.php?rubrique60

You could also easily walk to the train station and take a train to Portofino, if that's your choice.

Genoa has done a terrific job in rebuilding the area along the harbor (right next to the cruise dock) into a world-class neighorhood somewhat similar to the Inner Harbor of Baltimore (this used to be a seedy run-down area). Within a short walking distance of the ship there is a gorgeous ultra-modern Aquarium that can hold its own with any similar facility in the world. There are also some outdoor cafes (with harbor view) and shops in this immediate area which is so convenient for cruise passengers. As to Genoa, it does have some interesting old buildings (and the so-called Columbus house) that can be accessed with a hike or local transportation.

We had a wonderful time in Genoa. It is a very nice city and is very easy to get around by foot. There are many nice streets around the area to visit.

Here is a summary of what we did in Genoa from our World Cruise Blog.

Genoa is a beautiful city, with wonderful architecture everywhere you look. We felt very safe and unlike many of the other cities we have visited in Italy in the past, the traffic flowed in an orderly manner, motorists stopped at all of the red traffic lights and pedestrians only crossed the streets either when the traffic light turned green or in areas without traffic lights but with pedestrian crossways. In short, Genoa is a very civilized city that we would rank up there towards the top of the list of cities.

We walked along one of the main streets and at one point stumbled upon an enormous food market. The market had several different areas of beautiful looking produce from fruits to vegetables. There were several meat markets and other markets selling fresh fish and other seafood. Then there were several areas within the market with pastries and breads. And, let’s not forget the cheese. We saw and smelled the most delectable looking cheese. Oh, how we wish we had a market like this at near our home. It’s the kind of place that one might shop every couple of days to purchase very fresh food items.

We continued our walk and at one point walked down a side street that took us onto small streets that reminded us of being in Venice. We then walked towards the aquarium and then went inside the Aquarium.

Later in the morning, we visited the inside of the home that Christopher Columbus lived in from the age of four (4) until he turned twenty-seven. The house contained the bell from the Santa Maria. We then walked around some adjacent areas before it was time to take the shuttle back to the ship. All in all we had a wondrous day in Genoa.
