tuccritic Posted August 27, 2010 #1 Share Posted August 27, 2010 Has any previous cruiser visited Bar Harbor on this cruise? Is the town walking distance from the pier? Can we tour on our own or should be reserve a Princess tour?
Rare TracieABD Posted August 27, 2010 #2 Share Posted August 27, 2010 Hi- There is a separate section for travel. If you go to the main board, go down to the section for Ports Of Call. Click on New England. You will find lots of info about all of the ports including Bar Harbour. This is the link: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20 By the way, there is a lot to do in BH. It is lovely there!
davidnsteph Posted August 27, 2010 #3 Share Posted August 27, 2010 The tender pier is in downtown Bar Harbor. The town is easily walked. We took an historic walking tour on a previous cruise, which included historic homes, inns and churches. Very worthwhile. There are many gift and trinket shops all over town. It is very touristy. Getting to Acadia Natl Park and Cadillac Mtn requires a car. An organized tour is a good way to see them. David
alabama ghost Posted August 27, 2010 #4 Share Posted August 27, 2010 You can get a lot of info about Bar Harbor on the New England page under the ports of call. You tender into Bar Harbor pretty much in the center of town. We signed up with Oli's Trolley for a 2 1/2 hour tour which was great. If you're interested, google it and sign up. We also ate at the West Street Cafe and did some shopping around town. This was one of our favorite ports. Enjoy! Pam

DonnaK Posted August 27, 2010 #6 Share Posted August 27, 2010 The town is very cute and within walking distance of the tender pier. Howver, it's very small so it would probably only occupy an hour or so of your time. I'd recommend booking a tour of Acadia with either Oli's Trolley or the National Park Tour. We did the latter one because we wanted a bus with cushioned seats instead of trolley benches, and I strongly recommend it! It was well-worth it, and for less than $30pp, a better value than the ship's tour! Pam in CA Posted August 27, 2010 #7 Share Posted August 27, 2010 I can't resist: Bar Harbor = "bah habah" kind of slurred together. Gotta love a downeast accent.
wizard-of-roz Posted August 27, 2010 #8 Share Posted August 27, 2010 Oh! No! Just when you think you're done with your "bucket list" along comes "bah habah", I saw it many, many years ago....but, that memory is so distant, I MUST do it again! You have to talk like the Kennedy's, have very thick hair and great teeth!
Bowie MeMe Posted August 27, 2010 #9 Share Posted August 27, 2010 Notify the whale that I am coming to see it (or them :D) on our Oct. day in Bar Harbor. Could not do whale watching in Bay of Fundy (timing did not work out with port times) and the whale watch in Mexico there was only one Mamma whale and Baby -- and so many little nasty boats it is a wonder the whale didn't get hurt from their getting so close--. Need to see my whales for the year! In Mexico, I was able to spot the whale from the back deck of Coral Princess with binoculars -- yep look for the nasty little boats and there are the whales. Have a great time on your cruise and post a review real fast -- we don't leave until 25th of Sept.

If you walk to the square in the center of town there are buses that run several different routes through Acadia. You stop in the National Park Service office and pick up your ticket. The cost is $5 per person. You can get off at any stop and get back on. It is a get why to experience Acadia just watch the times that the buses run to and from any stop you disembark. Enjoy Bar Harbor, it is one of my favorite US ports!
darcy24 Posted August 27, 2010 #11 Share Posted August 27, 2010 Charming town - would do tour to Acadia, as suggested, and allow time to walk around town as well. Enjoy!

texanslovetotravel Posted August 27, 2010 #14 Share Posted August 27, 2010 We took the Oli's trolley to Acadia Natl park as well. Very worth it! We even had time to walk around and shop. There's a great shop for Christmas ornaments and several places to buy wine. It's one of my favorite u.s. ports as well.
PharmacyRx Posted August 27, 2010 #15 Share Posted August 27, 2010 Bar Harbor is very easy to walk and we also chose Oli's Trolley for the 2 hour tour of Cadillac Mountain and the park. All the shops are close together. We had lunch at the Rexall Pharmacy soda fountain and had great egg salad and chicken salad sandwiches and REAL cherry cokes! :)
bjkTX Posted August 27, 2010 #16 Share Posted August 27, 2010 We've done this cruise three times (so far) and love it (obviously) and Bar Harbor is a great place to wander around - just don't cross the street at the wrong place and get run over by the Porsche SUV. We have a special place we visit (on the pier) for clam chowder and unfortunately we always end up in the Christmas store (the wallet can only take so much...). Rare geoherb Posted August 28, 2010 #19 Share Posted August 28, 2010 We took a great kayaking excursion. It actually started on the sandbar that gives Bar Harbor its name. The tides there are amazing. We started on the sandbar and soon the water has us floating.
