Craps---when do press???

When do you press in craps.

1) Only when you are shooting?

2) When you know there's a good shooter?

3) Any time?

It's always fun to be in the game, but there are times when you feel it's time to press, and on the next throw you go down.

Is there a system to pressing, or do you just go by your gut feeling?

There is no right or wrong time to press your bets. However, you should come up with or adopt a system of playing that suits you style and bankroll.

Personally, I never bet on the shooter, because the one thing that is for sure is the shooter's gonna roll a seven. However, I do not press up my bets until I have secured a win. That means MY money is off the table and what remains are winnings. Never, ever place a bet because you have a "feeling". I have a feeling, too. A fool with a feeling and his money are soon parted.:D

I press when I'm doing it with the house's money. And I try to make sure that once I'm winning, I'll come out ahead even if the next roll is a seven, so I don't press too fast.

Beyond that, it depends exactly how many bets you have on the table, which ones are winning, etc. For a particular bet, one rule of thumb would be that it should win 2-3 times before you press it, but since my bets are spread around, I consider all the winners, not just a particular bet.

What I do is for each new shooter, I put chips on the top rail to cover the maximum I would bet for that shooter (for example, a passline and 2 come bets with 2x odds, plus a couple extra units in case there are some craps rolls). All the winnings from that shooter go on the top rail, and all bets for that shooter come from the top rail. So I can tell at a glance whether I'm ahead for that shooter or not (though you will know if you've been winning or not, even without that). Once I have some spare on the top roll, I start pressing with it. I never press with anything from the bottom rail.

On a long hot roll I make sure to stick some winnings down on the bottom rail, just to be sure that if I get carried away and press too much (or with exactly the wrong timing...) I'll still lock up some winnings.

When the shooter sevens out, I reset the top rail for the next shooter and the past is forgotten (if I was pressed way up, I revert back to my minimum bet).

This method works for me, to make sure I actually win something when the dice are good.

I follow take, press, regress,

Say I place the 6 for $6.00.

  • I take the first hit and put the $7.00 in the rack
  • I press the next hit, now I have $12 on the 6 with $2.00 more in the rack
  • I regress the next hit back down to $6.00, I put the $14.00 pay out plus the $6.00 I regressed in my rack

If The table is hot I press, take, press, take, press, take

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO F22 Smitty: There is no hard and fast rule for pressing. You never know when a shooter is going to have a hot roll. I have a few rules when deciding to increase a bet: To press a bet means you are making Place bets. The only numbers you should be Placing are the six and eight. If you are Placing the 5,9,4, and 10 then you are betting into high Casino edges. When you win the casino wins too because on Place bets you are getting House odds not true odds. The amount of difference between true odds and house odds is equal to a tax.

That said, I would have five numbers being hit. On hit number six Press the number that was hit. On the next hit of either number Press the opposite. Then every third hit Press on the third hit. On hit number four Press the opposite so the bets are equal.

This is a good conservative way of adding to your bets when a hot shooter is on a roll. It makes sure you walk away with some of the money and add to your bets if you wish.

Remember kids: "The more you bet, the less you lose when you win."

That being said I press right away and then press 1-3 units as the numbers roll again and again. Yes, a shooter that 7's out soon after establishing their point will cost me more money, but a decent shooter will win me a good amount of $$.

I'll start with $26-32 (the only time I bet the pass line is when I'm shooting) across on all the numbers and the first time any number rolls I'll press it. Then I take it to 3 units, then 5 units then 7 or 8 units, then 10 units....

Only when y'all approach the table for the first time to play. Do what i did before i started to play. I wrote down on the back of a business card the odds on the pass line and the come bets. Also how much to bet on the place numbers. Carried it with me to every casino i went to play. Worked for me. Even had floor personel in the old Bahamas Princess casino back in the early 70's ask me what i had in my hand and what i was looking at during the game. Guess they thought i was trying to cheat :D . NO ONE cannot under any circumstances match the adrenilin flow during a hot roll at the craps table.

Okay, I posted this question to get some opinions for me and others.

The best information I have ever received about craps was from a dealer.

"Once your money is on the table, it is not yours, and now it is up to you to get your money back".

What I have learned from this thread is that you let the table press your bets and take you original bet to the rail. Anything after that is your money.

When you get your original bet back, you keep pressing until someone or you 7"s out.

But when do you start loading the rack (as in stacking your chips)?

I'am not sure if craps is a right of passage for american gamblers but i have watched it being played on many cruises and remain confused. I like that it is loud and the players look like they are having a great time but it looks complicated.

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO chromered7: Craps is not a right of passage. Basically, if you like gambling, and have some sporting blood in you, Craps is the only game in the casino that pays true odds on some bets. Other games do not play true odds and only certain bets at Craps pay true odds.

Craps does look complicated when you approach the table the first time. But you can take the mystery out of what's going on by first doing a little reading. http://wizardofodds.com/craps has a great introduction. I'd advise you to read through the section on the Pass Line WITH ODDS first, without worrying too much about all the other bets available. Then go to http://casino.bodog.com/free-craps.jsp where you can practice without risking any money.

Good luck.

I dunno... in my 70 years on this earth I've come across a few ladies (including my DW who still does) whose adrenaline-producing ability beats the crap out of the craps table every time :D:D

  • 3 weeks later...

I am almost always pressing my bets. Every shooter, every roll, unless something unusal is happening. The only exception is I will occassionally say "same bet" and once in a blue moon will put in a regression.

I typically start with a 5 unit place bet, and my typical progression will be 5-7-10-10-15-20-30-40-60.

Depending on the roll I might get more aggressive (if hard ways or points are hitting). I know I should work a regression in there at some point, but I very rarely do.

I believe that you must always be increasing your bets (but also, keeping something to put in your rack) when you are on a winning streak. You must take advantage of the good rolls. You can not beat these games if you just flat bet.
