Camera and/or PC Experts step on in...

I am starting to have some technical problems similar to what happened to me on the Oasis. Since then I have replaced the camera and the data card but not the notebook.

What is happening is that sometimes when I transfer photos from the memory card to my notebook they get renumbered. Also, Explorer displays all of the photos nicely as thumbnails but when I click on one to see the full size photo I often end up displaying another photo.

It seems like I may need to replace the notebook too.

So far I am OK as I am uploading the photos I want to post to Photo-bucket and they are fine. It is the extra photos that I am loosing as they are renumbered or overwritten in the notebook.

Suggestions anyone?

I had this problem with a large group of pictures (over 1,500) that we took on a longish trip. Clicking on a thumbnail to get a full screen image would bring up a different picture. This never happened on any other group of pictures but we never had such a large grouping in one folder.

Question, how do you transfer the pictures to the computer? If you use windows scanner and cameras app, which should load and start automatically when you plug in a device with image files, that always prompts you to name the group of pictures you are about to download, along with the target folder. It then renames and renumbers all the images you have selected for download, but only in the target folder. The images on the original memory card are not re-named. I never use the option "delete after copying", that is a recipe for disaster.

If you try to download more images later on with the same name, it will pick up the re-numbering from the last image saved and will not overwrite earlier files.

This sounds like a software problem, not a hardware problem, as the earlier poster said.

Now I'll go back and read the thread from the beginning.

Jim, I am so enjoying your Live from The Freedom thread. Although, as much as I usually enjoy seeing your food photos...I'm trying not to look this time. Trying to drop a few lbs prior to my Halloween Cruise on the .....EEEEEK....Carnival Dream! Your reviews just may encourage me to try RCCL again. Enjoy your cruise as much as your can. Your next cruise will be much easier and more enjoyable. Take care and God Bless.

Claudette

I was planning to try lunch in the MDR today but they are closed. I am guessing they only open for lunch on sea days when there are plenty of people on the ship.

So I headed to the Windjammer, once again in a cheeseburger mood.

Here is my plate when I set it on my table. some assembly still required...:D

One of the "secrets" to RCI hamburgers is to pick a burger from the very bottom of the tray because they are sitting in the juice and will be very moist.

To the burger, I added cheese, mayonnaise, pickles, and tomatoes.

I added cheese, mayonnaise, mustard, tomatoes, and pickles to the hot dog.

Here they are moments before final assembly.

Note that I added a bowl of Creamy Broccoli Soup to the table. The soup was excellent, so were my custom made hamburger and hot dog!

Camera / Photo Issues

I have a memory card reader that plugs into a USB port on my notebook. I remove the memory card from the camera and plug it into the reader.

Then I right click "Start" and go into "Explore"

The notebook sees the card reader as a removable disk.

I "cut" the pictures from the card and then "paste" them into a single file for this cruise.

The camera (Nikon Coolpix S4000) consecutively numbers the photos and they should be added to the lower numbered photos already in the file folder.

This is where the problem is. Sometimes newer photos with higher numbers over write or get confused with existing photos.

When you say "cut" the pictures from the card, are you copying them and pasting or are you removing them from the camera and placing them on the computer. If you are removing them from the camera that way, for some cameras that can potentially screw up the numbering system.

One quick fix would be to make a master folder on your computer and a subfolder in the master folder for each time you copy pictures over, that way the pictures aren't in the same file and can't have conflicts (i.e. Master file is freedom - Sub folders are Day 1 am, Day 1 pm, etc.

I know that can be a pain, but your problem was several potential causes and this can at least alleviate loosing any pic's.

If your problem is strictly that they are out of order, you can use the sort by date feature in explorer to get them back in order.

SMOKING ON THE FREEDOM

I post this for information only. It is based on printed info from Guest Relations and my personal observations.

Please - Read it and then lets move on

I don't want to start another smoker vs. non-smoker fight

There are only three bars listed as "Smoking" on printed material I obtained from Guest Relations.

- The Sky Bar, Deck 12 (100% smoking)

- The Olive or Twist, Deck 14 (30% smoking) (the bar is non-smoking)

- Connoisseur Cigar Club, Deck 5 (100% smoking)

- Ash trays are available on Deck 12, Starboard (right) side in the space between the fore and aft elevator banks.

- The Casino is (my estimate) about 60% non-smoking.

- - The Casino Bar is non-smoking.

- - As you enter the casino from aft, the slot machines on the Starboard side and about one third of the way toward the front of the Casino have ash trays.

- - The Gaming Tables on the Port Side, Forward have ash trays

I had a great time at dinner in the MDR tonight!

The Head Waiter caught me as I entered the MDR and told me that he had found a few open seats here and there at large tables. So I am going to be a "Roving Diner" for the rest of the cruise.

I met six nice people tonight and had a pleasant dinner with them.

I had the Surf and Turf tonight. The flavor was excellent but the beef was a bit too tough. The shrimp was Excellent! The chocolate banana creme pie for desert was excellent. Even better when I improved it by adding two scoops of vanilla ice cream.

The wait staff put a great show on at the end of the dinner. They danced to beach music on the grand stair case. First time I saw this.

Outstanding!! So glad you enjoyed dinner - and how fortunate are those other diners to get so lucky with a visit from you! :)

That is a key to a great cruise. Vanilla ice cream with every dessert. :D:)

This is what I started doing on the Oasis with the old camera.

I will start it again tomorrow with the next group of photos.

Thanks...

That's what I do too.....yum!!!!

Best way to have a dessert. . . with more dessert :D

It's definitely more time consuming, but it does work. If your camera came with software, its importing tools may be better than just reading off the card. Of course, then you have to learn more software, and that's a pain too.

I think that today was my first really enjoyable day on this cruise.

I relaxed, finished one book and started two more.

I met some more CCers and made some new friends.

Glad you had your first enjoyable day! Keep it up :)

Previous cruisers said the "Crypt had smoking also on the upper deck. Must have been changed. If you find out any other smoking areas, please post them.

Not only do you give out great information but you are an inspiration to us all with how you have handled adversity. I hope each day gets better for you.

Best part is, since your now relaxed and this was your first real enjoyable day, more are sure to follow, tomorrow you don't have to get off the ship. Far to many times on the short cruises, one gets really relaxed and knows where things are and what to do and it's time to get off the ship. You've got three more days left. Live it up!!

Day 5, Thursday, September 9, 2010

Georgetown, Grand Cayman

Good Morning Everyone,

We are scheduled to arrive in Georgetown at 8:00 am and the Cruise Compass says the first tender to the shore will be at 8:30 am.

The last tender is scheduled to leave Georgetown at 3:15 pm.

The view from my balcony is impressive! It is still dark out but there is a line of lights on the horizon from the island. I tried taking a few photos with different settings on my camera but I didn't get anything but solid black.

It is a beautiful early morning. the sky is full of stars and there are a few thunder storms with occasional flashed of lightning way off in the distance. To far to hear the thunder.

Late sleepers miss this stuff.

Early to bedders like me miss all of the late night stuff on the ship.
