Tender Question

What Ports do you tender to?

At certain ports of call, small boats known as tenders are used to transport passengers from the ship to shore. Certain of these tenders may not be accessible to individuals using wheelchairs and mobility scooters, or the status of the tendering process at a particular port under certain weather, sea, swell, current and/or tide conditions may prove difficult for a safe transfer to take place. In each case, it will be the decision of the ship officials to determine, based on their evaluation of safety issues for our guests and crew, whether or not a guest using a wheelchair may board a tender. In order to safely board tenders, guests must be able to take steps and use a collapsible, fold up wheelchair; motorized wheelchairs and mobility scooters cannot be taken on tenders.

Just curious if anyone knows - what determines if a Port is a tender Port? Is it the depth of the harbor, size of the piers, size of the ship, number of other cruise ships in town at the same time?

Usually the draft of the ship determines it. There are certain ports that can handle certain classes of ships but not others. For example, Hamilton Harbour in Bermuda can handle the smaller, older ships but not the deep-drafted newer superliners. Also, weather plays a part in it as well. If the harbor has a narrow approach, the ship may not chance getting caught on a lee shore.

Which ports tender on the 8 day Eastern itinerary? (Puerto Rico, St Thomas, Antiqua, Tortola, Nassau) I know we dock in St. Thomas and Nassau, but we have never traveled to the others.

Thanks!

You could possibly tender at all of those ports except San Juan. I have seen Carnival forced to tender at all four of the others. I have also seen Carnival tender at St. Maarteen, it is much more common there than you think especially during the season.
