Just off Glory and Noro Virus

I agree with you and that should be your first defense. The hand sanitizer just supplements that when you are out and about on the ship and in today's world is necessary.

I have only noticed it at the entrance to the dining establishments.....in which I never use because I always wash before I dine......

So if you see me walk on by it is because I used the real stuff;)

If it is Monday and i am still sick and had to go to the doctor, i don;t think it is sea sickness. Doctor said it was a virus and probably noro virus. So i think it has to be an out break and i am sure hope it got cleaned up for the passengers on Sunday. I don;t think one would be suffering sea sickness still?

The Norovirus usually last 1-2 days. Are you sure you don't have the flu maybe? No matter, a doctor's visit was in order and I certainly hope you feel better soon. Lousy way to end a great cruise. Feel better :)

No flu..... i have had flu i know flu.. and with 100 cases confirmed by ship doctor i think it was Noro virus. It is even bad when customs guy say they know about the sickness... Lets face it there was the virus on the Glory and no need to cover it up>????????????

We carry and constantly use antiseptic gel on a cruise. We use the bathroom in our cabin usually and if we have to use public bathrooms use antibacterial wipes. Noro virus is common when large groups of people are in confined spaces. Keep your hands as clean as possible on a cruise. Noro can be on any surface that you touch.

Actually noro virus is very common it is only heard about on cruise ships cause it has to be reported to the CDC when a certain percentage of passenger have reported it.

Your first hint that it was noro was serving your buffet food by the staff.

Surgical type masks do not block out all odors, especially strong ones, hence, the reason why I either pop a peppermint or use a little vicks before I mask up for periods where I know I will be masked for more than 5 or 10 minutes. The only type of mask that would be effective is an N95 rated mask, but it really needs to be fitted to be effective in blocking out any/all odors. It is also the ONLY type of mask to prevent the spread of airborne viruses, besides an actual NIOSH rated respirator. If it is the SMELL of the bleach that bothers you, pack a tin of Altoids with your masks. If it is a chemical reaction your body has to the bleach (ie: allergy), a mask won't help.

Thanks for the info.!!

As far as I know, my body is only reacting to the smell. I seriously cannot breathe around the smell of bleach. It also, well, gives me the runs many times. :o

My immediate and some extended family have a summer place and my mother put a toilet bowl tablet in the tank of my toilet there. It contained (or maybe entirely was) bleach. Every time I flushed the toilet, I couldn't breathe. Not so fun when you've gone "number two" and have to stay there to wipe and flush again.... (She did remove it for me, thankfully.)

Sounds like the mask won't be effective. Thanks for your help, though!

As an FYI to Quampapetet and anyone else sensitive to bleach and chemical cleaners, please note that the ships (and port facilities) also use Virox - which is a chemical cleaner to disinfect against virus.

Not much you can do except try to remove yourself to an outside location until the smell disappates (DH has COPD and other health issues so we learned this first-hand unfortunately).

The good thing is that with the ventilation on the ship, the smell of the cleaners normally dissapates quickly.

Thanks for this info.!! I'm glad to hear that the smell dissipates quickly. :)

By the way, there is this great stuff called "Safe4Hours" that is a hand sanitizing lotion (antiseptic) that stays active on your hands (via polymer crystals) for up to four hours after you put it on. You wash your hands first, then apply the sanitizer (which also is a moisturizer). Your hands feel sticky/tacky for the first minute, but then they are fine. It is alcohol-free and kills 99% of germs.

I purchased some a few years ago when Disney World had a noro outbreak just before I visited. I liked using it.

I have to say that I am not a germ-a-phob, but I definatly sanitize my hands whenever I am going to be eating/drinking. I also want to open the bathroom doors at public restrooms with papertowels or with as little of my hand as possible. While you may have used soap and water after using the restroom, who knows how many people before you didn't. They leave thier germs on the handle, and now you have them. Yuck!

I have to say on my first cruise with NCL the crew put hand sanitizer in your hands as you embarked on the first day and every time you returned from a port of call as well as at the food stations. They would not allow you to handle or take food until you used the hand sanitizer which was located right there. I was very impressed by that. I think if ALL the cruise lines did this there would be less of a chance of catching something providing, of course, the passengers did their part.

This is all well and good except for people that have a reaction to the alchohol base in the hand sanitizers.....This is why I was taught to wash my hands with soap and water

You do know that the hand sanitizers do not kill the noro virus. They only kill germs. Washing your hands and watching what you touch and transfer to your mouth are the best defenses.

That is sooo true.. Do not touch your hands to your face period...Wash your hands frequently with hot water and soap. Use the towel to grab the handle on the door..and never touch your hands to your eyes, nose or mouth and you'd be really surprised and how few illness you get in a year by just doing something so simple..Thanks for bringing up the point about watching what you touch auburn77 very good point...

Feel most germs are spread around in the Gift Shops!

Think about it! They may do a great job cleaning other areas but no so in the gift shops. People touch things and sneeze on them.

I never shop in the gift shops, but do eat in the buffet. ;) Also, I try to never use the public restroom.

I don't want to imply that I do not wash my hands. Matter of fact I do that on the average of 30-40 times a day...yes, that much. I meant that the hand sanitizer should be used in conjunction with hand washing.

What I was saying and is some people.....me for instance....have a terrible reaction to the hand sanitizers. The one poster said that you couldn't walk on the ship without the crew squirting it in your hands as you boarded and also at the buffet. I wash my hands with hot water and soap but refuse to use hand sanitizer because of the reaction
