Just off Glory and Noro Virus

I guess i should have put LOL after the free cruise. I was just trying to put some humor into this post.

:D You're right ... no free cruise!

Seems lots (including crew, staff, and officers) on ours did and did NOT report having Noro. Very unlikely that if either of us have it again that we will.

That was someone else i got sick Friday night and we got off in the morning. What was i to do call doctor in the middle of the night? I did not see need to go to the ship doctor as i had medication i took and and got off as one of the first off the ship. Husband got sick when got home. I guess i need to email the CDC and tell them to add two the list?

I am sorry! ;)

Just put Safe4Hours on my shopping list. I'll use that in-between washing with hot water and what is offered on the ship. ;)

Just so ya know, the temperature you wash with doesn't matter. They studied it and found that it doesn't affect the germs. So, wash with whatever temperature feels best to you.

Glory sailing10/09 - 10/16 made it to the Vessel Sanitation Program list

Only 113 passengers were sick BUT look how many crew members

1,169 (1.71%)

Something seems off with the crew Numbers or percentage - I have a feeling the percentage is correct? I doubt there are over 100,000 crew members on board, LOL! And if the numbers were correct, I doubt there would be enough staff around to sail!

FYI, for those that were in close proximity to someone with and did not get sick, I did read an article that said some folks have a genetic mutation so that they are not susceptible to norovirus as well as rotovirus (another nasty GI bug). Consider yourself lucky!

i see now the Glory made events at sea website now. i have to admitt this is the first major outbreak of Norovirus for the CDC since April.

It makes sense why the cruise was so disappointing lack of staff due to sickness and also having to do double duty.

After reading the board and other reports of the Glory this was not a typical cruise.

(I guess bleach is the cheapest stuff that will kill the virus so that is why they use it instead of another disinfectant? I have a spray bottle of disinfectant that kills even MRSA, but it likely costs more than bleach would in the quantities that the ships must have on hand.)
Bleach is the best cleaner per the CDC: "The best cleaning product to kill norovirus and other gastroenteritis viruses is household bleach. The CDC recommends using a minimum 2% solution of household bleach in water to kill norovirus1."
Hand sanitizers will help with bacteria but will not kill viruses. Some food establishments do not provide hand sanitizers for food handlers because they can give a false sense of security and result in LESS handwashing. As stated, good personal hygine, including hand washing, is how you prevent the spread of Norovirus.
That is not true.

Hand sanitizers, depending on their alcohol content, can kill many bacteria and some viruses.

From the CDC:

Alcohol rubs kill many different kinds of bacteria, including antibiotic resistant bacteria and TB bacteria. It also has high viricidal activity against many different kinds of viruses, including enveloped viruses such as the flu virus, the common cold virus, and HIV, though is notably ineffective against the rabies virus.[18] [19] [20]

Alcohol rub sanitizers are not very effective against Norovirus (winter vomiting virus) unless they are combined with benzalkonium chloride in a hand sanitizer.[21]

Isn't the the same info from the link that I have already posted?

I knew right away that the crew numbers were off. Wouldn't the number be the number of crew members onboard, or is that number too low?
From the CDC - The outbreak on the Carnival Glory was named as norovirus.
Yes, the illness has been confirmed as Noro. I received an email back from the CDC. They really had no other update as to how the ship was doing this week, but did say that a representative had met the ship in New York and traveled with them to Newark.

They also said the following, so I will inform you if I hear any updates.
From the CDC - We are forwarding your inquiry to the Vessel Sanitation Program for their information. They will either contact you directly or we will forward any additional information if available.
