Can anyone recommend a reputable tour guide for Tulum?

One of our group is interested in trying a tour to Tulum with a local guide instead of the ships excursion. Any suggestions would be helpful.

When we went to Tulum all the guides are just waiting for you at the gate if you want to hire one. We did it without a guide which I'm glad because we could get through quicker and it was stinking hot.

It was a great place to go.

Thanks, Cruise Junky! Does this mean you took one of the tours to the ruins then looked at them without a guide, or did you find a way to do the entire tour on your own?

hstrybuf - do you have transportation to Tulum from Playa del Carmen? Is that really what you're looking for? I've been in touch with an American in PDC who can arrange for a van and driver/tour guide. Much cheaper and more flexible than going with the ship's excursions, especially if you have more people than can fit in a taxi. You just have to take the ferry on your own from Cozumel to Playa. Let me know and I'll give you an email address.

We actually had two weeks just outside Playa Del Carmen. If you want to do it really cheap...from PDC you can take a "Collectivo" which are their buses for about $1 - $2 and it'll drop you off outside the main gate. Then on entrance you can hire a guide. The collectivo's are great, they run about every 10 - 15 minutes.

Hi -

My husband and I want to go see the ruins, however, we don't want to be on a long, drawn out tour. We like to explore at our own pace. So, we want to do the whole thing on our own. So, from what I'm reading, is this correct:
Take a ferry to Playa Del Carmen and then take a taxi or bus to the ruins???

Is there an easier way?

We did the Tulum tour using the tour offered by the VOyager. It takes 2 hours travel time to get there and 2 hours travel time to get back. We spent 2 hours at the ruins. We used a tour guide then looked at the ruins ourselves. We had a great time. Because the tour runs so long I wouldnt trust an outside vendor for this excursion. The ferry only ran every hour and if we missed this ferry the ship would have left without us. I priced the excursion by private vendors. (sherry from insidecozumel suggested taking the ships tour)


The bus will stop at a local soveneir stand.. which is very VERY expensive. Joe got a chess set he paid 40 bucks for and saw it on the pier for 10. so wait.
