How bad is the smoking on Holland Eurodam?

Looking to cruise March 19, 2011 on the Holland Eurodam and was wondering how bad the smoking is on the ship. What balcony rooms are best to avoid smoke? Any feed back would be appreciated.

The number of smokers on any given ship at any given time will vary. If you're worried about balcony neighbors smoking....that's going to be a total crap shoot. No one can predict who their neighbors will be and if they will be smokers or not. There are very limited indoor areas that allow smoking. The Eurodam doesn't attrack more smokers than any of the other HAL ships.

If you simply can't tolerate encountering even the slightest smell of smoke, I suggest you find another line with stricter policies than HAL.

We could not use the casino any of our five cruises on Eurodam due to the smoke.

We always used to have fun with slot machines on all our cruises but have given them up in favor of being able to breathe.

We had one cruise on Eurodam we could not use our verandah for just about our whole cruise as we had smokers on both sides of us who really didn't care they kept making our lives so miserable when we tried to use our verandah. On the other hand, we had four cruises when we totally enjoyed our verandah and I used it a lot.

No way to know in advance how many smokers will be on any cruise and certainly no way to know if your neighbor will smoke.

As for balconies/verandahs -- totally unpredictable as to who will be smoking next to you.

Absolutely true. On Zuiderdam we could not use the balcony the entire cruise because of the smoke, noise, and obnoxious behavior from the people in the cabin next (up wind, naturally) from us. Oh yes, I forgot the snoring...first time I heard it I thought it was a fog horn.

On Eurodam we got lucky; no smokers on balconies anywhere near us and we spent many wonderful hours enjoying the views from the balcony.

It's luck of the draw...

Having been exclusively on RCI and Celebrity until last month, I can definitely say there is more smoking on the Eurodam and the smell will chase you out of numerous areas. The adult aft pool has the "official" outside smoking area and it makes most of the aft unbearable, in my opinion.

We enjoy cruising on HA (will be on HA ships for at least 50 days this year) but really dislike breathing smoke. So, we now save lots of money on HA because we totally avoid the casino where we would normally lose a bunch of money. So, in a strange way those smokers are saving us lots of money :) When we get the urge to gamble on a cruise we simply book a Celebrity cruise since their casinos are smoke-free.

You can definitely say there was more smoking on Eurodam on your cruise and if I only had one cruise out of our five on Eurodam, I would have said the same for the cruise we had smoking neighbors on both sides of us.

However, on the other four cruises we had on Eurodam, that was not the case and overall there was very much less smoking throughout.

All we can report about is what we experience on our cruise(s) but not as a general statement IMO

Snoring -- so far we haven't encountered anything like that.

Belcony/verandah smoke -- oh yes we have had cruises where we could not use it.

I certainly can cruise without a verandah but not in a cabin without a window. Some of us simply have to see daylight in order to function well.

Seeing as we are able to have a verandah, we always hope to have the use of it. Most of the time, it is fine.

Not bad in public rooms. Still a problem on the promenade deck, there's always one smoker who lights up near the bow & clears the whole deck.

Also smoking is allowed in cabins, so hope you don't get a room next to a chimney!

Judging from the slant in the smoking policy reviews( poor cringing, embarrassed smokers and arogant non smokers) I'd say the Cruise Critic is a smoker & the review is not objective. Best to check with others who want to avoid harmful 2nd hand smoke. Royal Carribbean & Celebrity have best non smoking policy. A breath of fresh air.

Doing the same cruise, I try to avoid smoke wherever I am, hoping it will be OK, wont let it ruin our vacation!

Sorry I can`t agree about Royal Carribbean, I find them as bad, if not worse, than HAL. We always seem to be surrounded by smokers on the balcony, and RCI seems to have more smoking areas through the ship.

I'm a smoker, and we either book a room that projects out from the "recessed" cabins mid ship or try to get a stateroom as near to the stern of the ship as possible. If all smokers would do this, and all non-smokers would book a cabin as far forward as possible, we might just politely learn to get along without big brother interference or a lot of whining.

I'm one of those whiners who have spent good money to rent that 240 sq feet of prime real estate for the week. It's my home including the balcony for the week. When my neighbors light up it's just like they have lit up right in my living room. Maybe I should bring my ghetto blaster. I'm not sure if there is a policy that prohibits me without any consideration for my neighbors to crank it up. I'm not going to change the world and in meantime I'm simply not going to rent a balcony cabin on HAL until their policy changes. I do appreciate the fact that those smokers are operating within the existing policy.

We found NO problem with smoking on the Eurodam three weeks ago.

We don't gamble, so avoiding the casino was not an issue with us. We also skipped the adjacent Piano Bar and Sports Bar, but had no problem finding adequate beverage service elsewhere.

I was a little worried about our cabin, as my wife is VERY sensitve to smoke, and had brought along Frabreeze spray in case it was needed, but the room had NO smoke smell at all and I never detected any smell of smoke in our entire hallway.

HA is still conducting their departure survey on smoking, as has been noted before, so they must be considering making a change in policy.

We are nosmokers who love the nonsmoking policy on Celebrity and were concerned about cruising HAL because of their more tolerant rules.

We spent all day on sea days at the aft pool and there more smokers on both sides--I thought it was only allowed port OR starboard and only one side had ashtrays, but rules were not posted and it was a bit of anything goes. Someone did start to light a cigar and passengers next to him said something and he left--not sure what transpired but it was peaceful.

In most instances unless a smoker was right next to you, the wind carried the smell away and it was not a big problem--the smell was there a second and gone. There was a time or 2 we left because it must have been still enough the smoke hovered over us.

We did go up or down a deck to avoid walking through the casino to get to the theater because it reeked. There were a few lounges that you smelled when you walked by too.

Overall it was not a problem. I have asthma and did not need my inhaler a single time from the smoke.

I agree with posters about not getting a balcony because of the smoke around you. We could have gotten one for a couple hundred more, but are staying with our window only.

I hope you love the Eurodam like we did.

Why do people who are so adverse to smoke continue to book on lines which allow smoking in places they object to? As far as HAL's smoking survey, they have been doing this for years, so I doubt they are going to change anything soon. I think the survey is to soothe anti-smokers that the line is studying the issue.
