All things EARTH...

Anita, do you know Cara Delevigne? She is model who is changing the eyebrown "scene" right now. There are fashions in brows like everything else. The trick is just to find the shape that's best for you, and think of the rules as just general guidelines. Personally, I don't like my brows to be the first thing people notice about my face, but then, I don't have naturally attractive brows to begin with.

Today is smokey eye day:

smokey1.jpg

Liquid eyeliner on the top lid, blue everywhere, a peachy taupe on the inner corner and brow bone, one thick coat of mascara, pencil liner on the bottom:

smokey4.jpg

Ta da!

smokey5.jpg

Here's what I'm wearing:

face:

Clinique Almost Powder #2

Clinique powder blusher in Fig (new from Bonus Week at Macy's - I think I like it)

Cover Girl Outlast lip stain and balm in 626

Anastasia brow pencil

eyes:

Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color eye shadow in Shimmering Emerald (yes, emerald)

Bourjois Pastel Mat eye shadow in Beige Trompe L'oeil

Stila waterproof liquid eyeliner in Moss

Make Up Forever Aqua Eyes in 20L

Covergirl Lashblast Volume waterproof mascara in brown/black

Some eyeshadow tips for this look:

I started with a mild cat-eye liner style. It makes a good base for a smokey eye.

In addition to covering the lid, I put color along the curve of my eyelid crease just above it, using a Q-tip which I find smaller and easier to manage than an applicator. Then I put brow bone color on. Then I use a small brush to feather the edge and blend where the two colors meet, without mixing them.

I imagine a line between the outside corner of my eye and the end of my eyebrow. I don't put color below that imaginary line. It gives the eye some lift, and it's a lot cheaper than plastic surgery. :)

I use a neutral matte shadow on the inside corner of my eye, which tends to be dark.

I don't put lower lid eyeliner on all the way to the outside edge. Leaving a little space between the lower eyeliner and the upper liner also gives a bit of lift and openness to the eye.

A good eyelash curler is a useful tool.

Today, everything except the eye shadow, which has a very mild shimmer, is matte.

I think the last time I wore this eye shadow was on the Dawn Princess, which was two years ago, when I wore a teal dress for formal night.

Laurie, I'm so sorry to hear that your ear isn't better yet. To make you feel better, here are some fashion photos from last month in RED, just for you!

First, some jewels:

Bulgari.jpg

This Valentino skirt is awesome:

Pucci suit:

I would never wear this, because it would totally overpower me, but I think it's compelling for some reason, as only Prada can be:

Can you imagine dancing in this Dolce dress? It must be divine:

Finally, how absolutely lovely is this Carolina Herrera:

Margaret! You helped me so much with that comment about the invisible line and not putting any color beyond that line! I've been experimenting with makeup today, using the one photo that I loved so much for inspiration.

First, my eyes are more muddy in color than I realized. I was trying to match the colors of that photo closely, and I picked a too dark, too clear green and my eyes didn't look very good. Anyway...I tried again, using the photo as inspiration instead of absolute and I came up with this...

Btw...it is so difficult to get good photos of makeup! How do you do it Margaret?

P1090714_zpsf1344fdb.jpg

Shimmery gold over the whole lid and inner eye and around the whole eye. Matte peach on the brow. A color called Sunburst (Ulta) in the crease. Another olive/antique brass kind of color on the outer lid (in a kind of long triangle) and smudged under the eye. Used my eye liner brush to use a deep, dark slightly evergreen green. Khaki Bronze mascara by Chanel.

My eyes are a bit puffy. I think the whole could be an allergy, could be a low grade cold...so I have to raise my eyebrows and give a funny look to try to get this photo:

P1090716_zpsafe95dd2.jpg

I did do some brownish/tan-ish blush to try to contour. A peachy color on the apples. I did my new lip color with a very bronze lip gloss:

P1090717_zps57431889.jpg

I'm calling this my bronze face!

And in honor of my inspiration from Mom's trip report...everyone knows she is writing her report over on the FIRE thread? (It's totally awesome...). Anyway, inspired by the manikins...I went to work to make a fun, smart casual outfit. And I am so pleased with the results!!!

So. I'm wearing my new tank from JJill. This is a jacket from Chicos from several years ago. I drove the woman crazy because I wouldn't purchase a jacket that required dry cleaning! The jeans are Denizen from Target. The scarf is also from a while back, from Target, I think.

The reason I am so incredibly pleased with this outfit is that I really like this scarf and jacket. And I NEVER wear them. I haven't been able to figure out an outfit for them. I haven't tried too hard with the jacket. The scarf is very shimmery...so I have a hard time with it...and I have tried there. Anyway:

P1090723_zpsf04cd371.jpg

I just love all the scarf manikins? And they inspired this look. The scarf is an infinity scarf that I wrapped 3 times!. You can see that it has bronzey colors, rust, and a lovely blue. I'm wearing one of my fav pairs of earrings...the amber drops from Grandmother:

P1090728_zps20e29214.jpg

Here's the whole thing...you can see my nails too! In this photo...they are definitely looking orange based:

P1090729_zps78ffa2a3.jpg

I can totally see how having a single strand bead necklace peeking down under the scarf would look great! But I don't have one that would match.

I haven't dealt with the whole shoe dilemma...*sigh*

Laurie , Sorry about your ear problems . Hope they figure out a permanent cure .

Margaret , love the make up tips . I need to purchase some new make up

Anita , Great outfit . We just booked a Nov. cruise so I ordered a few things from JJill at 30% off plus I had a coupon for $20 off $80 .

We went to the reunion . It was fun . I had a lot of time to observe everyone . All the guys looked their age (67-69) but the women , some looked their age ,a few looked a lot older & a few looked somewhat younger and one woman looked 20 years younger . I really observed her . She did not appear to have had plastic surgery . She was dressed in vibrant colors & her hair was a dark red bob. The few who looked a lot older all had gray hair & were dressed in older looking clothes .. There were lots of Chico outfits and some great jewelry . After all this observation I decided to put more color in my wardrobe and add some dramatic jewelry . I tend to be too conservative .Gary had a great time reliving his high school days with his friends .All in all a good time & I felt fine in my clothes choices .

Well I would have posted sooner but the old dog is having issues with the new one. Mason is a year and a half old rescue. He is a great little dog. My existing dog is being very defensive so we have to keep them separated. Right now, the interaction is "controlled".

I find that as I get older, I'm more confident about choosing things like clothing. It really helps to have done the Style Statement book too, as the direction I need to go in is so much clearer.

I really want to figure out eye makeup the way you , Anita and Margaret, have. I sure hope these dogs let me practice before my trip!

I didn't go to my 30th reunion last year and I so wish that I had.

Margaret, I'm loving all

Those reds! Seeing a necklace really brought a smile to my face- red and jewelry, my two favorite things!! I loved the color of the last dress. Such a beautiful red for us.

Anita, I love that outfit. It's really got me thinking. Especially the thought of a necklace peaking out under a scarf. I have this necklace made of different lengths of pearls mixed with gold chain. I'm envisioning that with a scarf. I think I would really have to have the right things together to make it work but it sure sounds like fun!

So, what kind of weather are you all having? It is quite chilly here. Frosty almost!

We are at 37. I think it was low 50s earlier. A vest is great right now during the day over a sweater and with a scarf.

I'm happy to be going back to

The specialist tomorrow.

Thank you all. I have new ear drops and an antibiotic to go with it this time. One suggestion she made was to get a new hearing aid mold. Since they are soft for comfort, they may be absorbing these germs and letting them multiply! I'll give it a try!

Lol. Yes, that's me. I am sorry it's taken me so long to respond, but had some health issues and was in the hospital. Out now and recovery day by day.

It's funny but those pictures from the intervention barely look like me. I think I have done so much with my hair that I don't get attached to any particular color. I was a dark auburn haired child but began going grey in my teens and seriously started coloring in my early twenties. I was a redhead for many of those years and have done all versions of red out there (even pink once or twice). When Curt suggested the warm brown with gold/caramel highlights, I tried it but it never felt right. I didn't care for the brown and wound up going back to what I knew - red. But now I am so grey and keeping up.with the darker hair was getting to be too much (money, time, etc) that I went blonde over a course of about 8 months. I like it. It feels like me. Sadly it sounds like maybe it isn't a good color for me though.

I will try to get a picture outside without makeup and we can figure it out better from that.

Laurie - I hope your ears are better. That's horrible that it's lasted so long.

Margaret and Anita - your makeup looks fantastic! And Anita I love that outfit with the jacket and scarf. So cute!

Mousey - how was parents weekend? Been thinking of you!

I'm so sorry to hear about your hospital stay! I hope younfeel better soon!

You know, i am thinking aboit your hair.. maybe a darker, warmer blonde or strawberry blonde? It may be a good compromise as it will pick.up on your current love of blonde and also the red you were once comfortable with. My hair color is a bit lighter than my natural color because it makes hiding the gray easier. My gray is that annoying wiry stuff that gets unrul. in my pictures that I've posted, youcan see that I have rather silky hair that is straight. Putting a handful of grays along the part that go every wrhich way does nothing for me. I still color my own so it is really inexpensive. However, i get busy and donn't color it as much as I should.

I know my ear will get better. I am a patient person but this has overstayed its welcome. :(

I have already called my audiologist to get a new mold. We are going towait a bit longer so that the swelling goes down, Otherwise it won't fit well imay try next week because they come in pretty quickly.

I will bet my cruise will make me feel better. Yay!

Mousey hasn't checked in lately, has she? I will bet she loved parents weekend. Those are so much fun.

Pam, did you find Oasis to feel too big? I have heard people say that there isn't enough time to see it all but you were on board for 14 days, right?

Laurie, No. The Oasis wasn't too big. Here's such a weird twist; I love the Radiance class on Royal, but I think the Voyager class ships are a little bit too big. Now, how could Oasis not feel too big when I feel that way about Voyager, which is obviously so much smaller?

I think that it's just a matter of ship design. Even though the Oasis does have that emphasis on the interior of the ship (enhanced by the fact that I had a Central Park balcony stateroom), there are so many vistas on the ship that are intimate and beautiful, that its size gets effectively reduced, psychologically.

Also, I think that the Cruise Director had a lot to do with keeping the ship's size away from front of mind, kwim? There were so many activities on board from which I could pick and choose that I never felt crowded by anyone. Even when we were involved with activities that kind of packed you together, the feeling was like being in an intimate neighborhood of a large city.

Also, it may help that my DH and I are creatures of habit, actually he is more than I. I can probably be anywhere on board and pretty much have a good idea of where he is, if he's not with me. He'll be in the gym or, if not there, he'll be on the jogging track. He'll be in the buffet, probably never in the dining room, especially alone. He'll be taking a shower and, if not there, he'll be looking for me. He'll think that I'm on a lounger in the Solarium. That sort of thing! Is that funny?!?

And, as the days went by, other people added to the feeling of being on a smaller ship. Schedules started to coalesce, as in you saw the same people having breakfast with you at the same time in the same location. That sort of thing.

I did enjoy the Oasis. So much that we are taking the Allure to her dry dock next year. Both DH and I love, love, love the sea days and that itinerary is unique in the number of consecutive sea days that you get on board that beautiful ship! Even if the activities don't come together as well as the Oasis sailing, there's so much self-entertainment capability on board that I'm not concerned.

ChollaChick! I understand your frustration, especially with loving the red color and being faced with its high maintenance. From a skin tone perspective, I don't think there's any more thought that needs to go into your coloring: it's definitely warm and you have that skin "look" that screams EARTH to me. You have an interesting dilemma in that feeling of not fitting into the category that, in theory, provides you with the opportunity of color dressing in order to look your best. It's been about five years since Curt called me a FIRE, and I fought that pretty hard; in fact, we had a whole discussion on our FIRE thread about bending the rules, etc. At the ultimate end, it's just a matter of using a tool that helps you look your best... no different than finding the right shade of any makeup that looks better on you than another... that sort of thing.

Maybe we can help you with your feelings about fitting into your EARTHiness. I think Laurie has such a brilliant thought: a warm strawberry blonde just might fit your personality and your feelings about yourself when you look into the mirror; it's a matter of just getting that balance of golden warmth; I think your current color is a bit too platinum or ash toned... for you to look your best. I'm struggling right now with the thought of changing my color up a bit... just because of its high maintenance. It's really hard to walk away from! Believe me, I understand what you're saying.

So glad you both are feeling better.

So you ladies have me seriously thinking about changing my hair color. I am not afraid of hair color and actually prefer to do it at home (alone, naked with a glass of wine - don't judge... Lol it's messy and a girl gets thirsty). So I need some advice ideas. Keep in mind I like edgier things so would like to do something kind of fun/funky but not so much that everyone who sees me wonders what the forty-something woman is thinking and how long she will be released from the psych ward. Funky yes. Insane no. What kind of pictures do you need/want? I have to warn you my eye is still pretty bruised from my fall but if you can look past it and focus on my non black eye this could be fun.

I have come to the conclusion that I may now be Fire (with silver hair, green eyes & beigey, pinkish complexion) than the Earth that I believe I was with my dark auburn hair. If you don't mind, I'll continue to peek at this board, y'all are so friendly. Melody

Omigosh. You are so fun.

The first time I went to Europe, I saw all these youngish (well, younger) girls with streaks of blue, purple, maroon, bright yellow in their hair. I came back and asked my hair stylist to put some streaks in my hair. She said.. No. Just. No. She just wouldn't do it for me! LOL. Course, there's a huge difference between 40+and 60+ when it comes to potential release from the psych ward.

I'm sorry you took a fall; I'm glad that you are OK. Anita knows that I ran smack into a glass wall in the Charles De Gaulle airport; I literally ran into that glass wall... thought it was an empty space. Boy. It hurt so bad; I almost knocked myself unconscious. It's so amazing how easy it is to have an accident.

I wanted to tell you, though, that fresh pineapple has an enzyme that will help with tissue repair, especially bruising. If you like pineapple, go grab yourself one; it will really, really help. Speaking from personal experience!

Thanks ladies!

Cholla chick -start off with some burgundy streaks, either by highlight or lowlight. I miss my red hair, but I can't do anything about it (allergy), just glad I have hair. If you don't like it it's easy to cover. My mom used to make her hair blue, but I'm not sure it was intentional...

Another vote for pineapple to reduce bruising. Melody

Melody - What are your thoughts my base? It's currently very blonde... I am game for the burgundy streaks have done something similar before but not sure what to do as the base color.

Blue... lol... My grandma was likely an air who went from blonde to a strangely yellow grey in her 50's. She had to use some type of blue shampoo to make the color look silver and not the color it naturally was. Sometimes she got a little heavy handed with the bluing... Not quite smurf-like but definitely kinda unnatural.

Pam and Melody thanks for the ideas on the pineapple. I love pineapple so I am heading out to look for a good one today. :)
