Flame me if you will!!! I totally disagree with the last 2 posts. 35 years ago I would have did exactly as you are stating above, when there were no such thing as smoking and no smoking sections and restricted areas. As a matter of fact I was known at that time to actually get up and move to another location away from anyone to have a cigarette.

Over the years my views have changed and now I will openly admit that I would not do what either of the above posters suggest they would. The last cruise we were on was extremely cold and windy outside. Given the only indoor place on the ship, besides our cabin that allowed smoking was the casino, we spent a good number of hours in there. The non-smokers that have issues with smoke had the luxury of fully enjoying their 98% indoor activities I was enjoying a very small portion of the ship. I do not hold my cigarette close to anyone if I can help it and do no blow smoke in their direction. Although with the fan system most casinos have, I have no control on where it blows it. I have tried to move my cigarette or blow out smoke in a different direction but that rarely works.

BTW to poster of the non-smoking nights of the casino if you read up on reviews about those nights you will still find an extreme amount of complaints about the room still smelling of smoke and how “they may have well just let the smokers in”. So my response is that the 2 posters are wasting their time since there is no pleasing the righteous complainers anyway no matter how hard you try.

My wife and I are non-smokers, and if we end up in a room that has stale smoke we end up feeling sick...I have an allergy to tobacco and although she hasn't been tested, she may as well.

 

When I selected my room, there wasn't any distinction made about which rooms are smoking versus non-smoking. Obviously, if smoking is allowed in all rooms this could be a huge deal for us because the people before us could have smoked like chimneys and left us with a room smelling like day old cigarettes.

 

What's your experience with this?? I can't believe i didn't think about this. I'm angry with myself, because this could actually ruin a cruise for us.

 

The cabins that I have been in (NCL and Carnival) had signs posted no smoking in cabin. LOL Don't go near the Casino. You can just walk through there and you smell like you have been smoking. ;)

That is funny, I have never seen a sign in any cabin, I have been in on NCL, stating that there was no smoking allowed in the cabin. :confused:

If you saw a "no smoking sign" in an NCL cabin it was probably a prank left by the previous occupant.

Celebrity is about as close as you can get right now. No smoking in cabins, balconies and the majority of ship public areas.

 

I hope that NCL adopts this policy soon for safety sake. Limit smoking to certain areas.

Actually I’ve googled this and Engine fires appear to be your main cause of cruise ship fires, so I’d say a safe bet would be for you to choose a cruiseline offered that doesn’t have an engine. The only one I could find to support your theory was the Star Princess in 2006 and that was deemed as “possibly started by a discarded cigarette”.

I would say you are in more danger with the electrical items that people bring on board. Hairdryers with bad cords or oversized, old extension cords or power bars with frayed cords or do not meet today’s standards. Electrical octopus created by trying to plug in too many electrical toys for the amount of receptacles that are in the cabins. Quoted from another thread this week regarding electrical outlets “We usually take a coarse nail file along, so that I can file the wider prong of the extension cord down to fit, if necessary. Never had any problem charging our toys, such as iPods, cell phones, cameras, etc. Grounded outlets or not, did not seem to matter.” Those cords are polarized for a reason!!

All the smokers I know are twice as careful with their cigarettes on someplace like a ship because contrary to what appears to be popular belief, we don’t want to be on a burning ship anymore than you do.

And for your information the areas that allow smoking are VERY limited on NCL.

It's funny that the cabin steward would not have noticed it and took it down. I'd say they weren't very observant when they cleaned the cabin :)

Yep, I can buy the same type of sign at my local hardware store or Staples, a little double backed tape and viola'. If I were a smoker I'd ask the steward why that cabin is no smoking when NCL's policy clearly allows it.

Maybe, I can see that scenario if I squint really hard;) but the cynical side of me still leans toward prank. In either case it's a question the steward would be able to answer.

I've seen a little sign asking people not to smoke in bed on NCL ships. Smoking was still allowed in the cabin.
