How to keep in touch on cruise

We are taking our children and grandchildren on the Allure of the Seas. We have five cabins. We want to be able to keep in touch with them so we can join them for various activities and enjoy just being with them. But we don't want to be pests and we want them to enjoy some alone time with their spouses also. We know we will be together for dinner but really want more than that. Also, getting 14 people seats together in the lunch buffet would probably be difficults.

How do other family groups handle this? Thanks

Just discuss the next days plans at dinner...then, you'll have a good idea of what everyone is doing. It's really not as hard as you might think to "find" each other, if you have some idea of what everyone will be doing!

It's EASY to be seated together for lunch in the dining room! Give that a try!

I'm sure you'll be meeting up at the pool, or casino....places like that. And, you can leave messages on the cabin phone!

Dinner time is a good time to chat and make plans for the next day. Those that want to do an excursion can, others might want to shop, other might want to hang by the pool. No sense in insisting everyone do any one activity. That's why cruises are great for families because there is usually someone that want to go to the beach, while Grandpa and Uncle go on some boring island tour... sorry Dad!

In most all public areas on ships there are wall phones. Just dial your cabin number and leave a message. You can then check your messages when back in the cabin.

On our last family cruise, we put a notepad and pen in each family's cabin. If you change location, you were to write it down along with the time of day. You could also put a notepad or small whiteboard on your cabin door with a pen/pencil on a string. However, anyone coming by your cabin could erase your message or write most anything else on it!

You can purchase (or maybe rent) walkie talkies. There's a lot of debate as to how well they work on a vessel full of steel framing and some family members don't like having to carry them around. Others say they work great and allow for instant communication.

Here's hoping you have a great cruise. Bon Voyage!

Our family had walkie talkies which worked great. I also would bring post-it notes, I wished I had brought some although I found that they number on the door is raised such that you can tuck a piece of paper behind it but post-it notes would have been easier.

Also, if any of the kids are going to be registered in Adventure Ocean, they will provide you with a cell phone per family. Not only do they use this to get in touch with you if they need to but you can use it to call phone to phone or room to phone, phone to room, etc. It really is a nice perk.

Have fun!
