just back from the Maasdam

We left the Maasdam yesterday after 11 days. Like always, we had a wonderful time; it is hard to get back to reality!

I would like to thank all the cruise critic members who took the time to answer my questions before we sailed.

Welcome home. Really happy you had a wonderful time on Maasdam.

Did you see signs during your cruise that she was going directly to drydock when you left? Had they started to remove furniture that would be reupholstered, stripped carpeting in some areas? Anything like that?

We too just got off the Maasdam. A great cruise! I was concerned before we went on the cruise that they'd start stripping the ship early in the cruise. While there were some very minor preparations early on they really didn't do much until the last day, which was a full sea day, and for us it wasn't a problem. Most of the prep work was either out of sight or the few things they did up on the sports deck like wrapping the nicely varnish hand rails in carpet and taking down the netting around the tennis and basketball courts. I can't or won't say I got around the whole ship, we kind of hang out forward in our cabin, the Crow's Nest, and later in the casino so I can't speak for everybody and my wife did hear some complain about "some things" connected with the pending dry dock.

You're like us. We tend to hang out in the same places around the ship. We have our favorite lounge, really love our cabin/veranda, DH loves lounging at aft pool, Pinnacle and Dining Room....

But some areas of the ship, we hardly visit. Less so on Maasdam given her smaller size than on the Vistas and Signature. There were some areas on Noordam we barely glimpsed once or twice on our recent cruise. Same for Eurodam.

We are the same way. Once we find a cozy nook, we really feel at home. :) Looking forwards to exploring the Maasdam. With every new ship, a new adventure.

To Lizzie and Randy... glad your cruise was lovely. We are looking at that cruise for next winter. Help drive the dreary winter blues away. :(

No...just on the last night when they roped off part of the 12th deck and removed the deck chairs there and at the Lido and aft pools.

At one of the ports, I was told some furnishings were disposed of at the pier (along with some surplus food). Workers were taking what they wanted and the rest appeared to go in a dump truck.

As noted above, on Wednesday the railings were wrapped in carpet scraps for protection. On the same day they also covered some sections of the deck with 4x8 wood sheets and plastic so materials could be stacked on the decks without damage. This continued into Thursday. When we disembarked on Friday morning the stairs going above the Lido deck had been covered with plastic and roped off. The pool area furniture had been stacked in the pool.

No time to do a full tour of the ship, but as we were disembarking, cranes were lifting shipping containers and dumpsters onto the ship.

I do know in St Lucia some of the furniture off loaded was being donated to schools on the island. We got held up while the truck pulled away and I asked the HAL person who was directing traffic. Other things I saw them haul off the ship was just scrap lumber and what looked like cabins that had been busted apart.

Welcome home, Lizzie! We were on the Maasdam in Jan/Feb for the 1st time and loved her...so much so that we've booked the same cruise next January!

Glad you had a wonderful time.
