CruiserBruce Posted July 4, 2011 #2 Share Posted July 4, 2011 Taxi is probaly the most expensive option. It will be in the 130-150 euro range.
Ingakatrin Posted July 4, 2011 #3 Share Posted July 4, 2011 10 days ago the taxidriver wanted 160 Euro but the taxi seated 8, so it was reasonable.

Devon Bloke Posted July 4, 2011 Author #5 Share Posted July 4, 2011 Many thanks for your replies. Our original plans for getting into Rome have had to change at the last minute - hence the taxi question. Have checked out the trains on the Trenitalia web site...and researched how to get from ship to station via port shuttle to port exit and walking to station. Question...how frequent are the free port shuttles and how long does it take to get to the port exit, using them? Cheers Andy
euro cruiser Posted July 4, 2011 #6 Share Posted July 4, 2011 Question...how frequent are the free port shuttles and how long does it take to get to the port exit, using them? There will be plenty of them when you first get off the ship in the morning, then less so as the day wears on, then many to bring you back to the ship at the end of the day. How long it takes to get to the port entrance/exit depends on how far out your ship is berthed. Ours took less than five minutes.
bjcourt Posted July 5, 2011 #7 Share Posted July 5, 2011 Well over 100€. Or the train, which is €9/ea return including all Rome metro and buses (BIRG ticket) Yes, take the train! It is a short walk to the train station. Get off at St. Pietro station if you want to visit the Vatican first, or go on to Termini which isn't very far from the Colosseum. wcook Posted July 5, 2011 #8 Share Posted July 5, 2011 All in, figure 15-30 minutes from ship to train station.
euro cruiser Posted July 5, 2011 #9 Share Posted July 5, 2011 Yes, take the train! It is a short walk to the train station. Get off at St. Pietro station if you want to visit the Vatican first, or go on to Termini which isn't very far from the Colosseum. There is little reason for most tourists to go all the way to Termini - it takes additional time (a precious commodity during a one day port visit) and doesn't get you closer to most sites. You can find directions using the train and public transit to the key sites on this thread: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1237189&highlight=reach+key+rome+sites+civitavecchia
Devon Bloke Posted July 5, 2011 Author #10 Share Posted July 5, 2011 Thank you all, so much, for your advice. We're arriving at Civitavecchia on the the Queen Victoria on Friday 15th July. My mum was supposed to be accompanying us - on her first ever cruise and her first visit to Rome. We had organised a private car and driver to take us from the ship and do the whole Rome tour and take in all the sights. My partner and I have been to Rome a few times before and have done the sights under our own steam. The car & driver was so that mum (who is a "lady of a certain age") could take in all the sights of Rome, in a day, without too much exertion in the July heat. Unfortunately, last week, she had a fall and won't be able to come on the cruise. Big shame...but there's always another time. Hence why, Joe and I wanted to look at the best way into Rome - not needing the car and driver now. We've got pre-booked tickets for Galleria Borghese, so we can have a nice leisurely train ride into Rome and head there. Once again, thanks for your advice and tips! Am off to finish the packing as we leave Southampton on Friday 8th July! Cheers Andy

LOL - you've hit on one of the exceptions to the rule, for the Galleria Termini is the best train station. From there you can take a cab or the #910 bus for five stops, and you're across the street from the entrance to the park and the galleria.
