RjayB Posted August 9, 2011 #1 Share Posted August 9, 2011 Disclaimer: This post is for informational purposes only :) Freedom 8-day 7/30/11 from Fort Lauderdale was our 9th Carnival cruise. We have brought along plastic bottles of liquor on all 9 cruises. However, this was the first time security called to ask that I join them on Deck 0. We had 3 suitcases, each with a 750ml plastic bottle and 6 plastic mini-bottles. However, only one of the cases was present when i arrived downstairs. They asked if there was any alcohol in the suitcase, and I said yes. They asked to open it, and I showed them where the big bottle was. They asked if that was all, and I lied :o and said yes. They believed me, told me i could pick up the bottle on debarkation day, and sent me on my way. The two other suitcases arrived within the hour, with no problems. I have no clue if this is evidence of them stepping up security, or if it is just the law of averages catching up. Either way, I'm probably just going to do Bon Voyage for our platinum cruise in December.
Rockportgirl Posted August 9, 2011 #2 Share Posted August 9, 2011 I think they're stepping it up. We got caught for the first time last year. Of course, we did the plastic travel bottles as well. Rum Runners are apparently the way to go if you're going to try.
Socref124 Posted August 9, 2011 #3 Share Posted August 9, 2011 We got sent to the naughty room on our 11th Carnival cruise. We had 2 bottles of wine in our checked bag and they caught it. They are definately looking at smuggling now. If you read Joh Healds blog, the "beards" are looking for rum runners now as well.
marshhawk Posted August 9, 2011 #4 Share Posted August 9, 2011 And eventually I guess all luggage will be opened and screened, which will really slow down embarkation. Wonder what they would have done if you lied and they found more???
Calico Jack Sparrow Posted August 9, 2011 #5 Share Posted August 9, 2011 In my "professional" opinion you were a little "overboard" there. 750ml bottles are large enough to be easily seen, and they are bottles. That was a lot of liquor, even for me.:D

Though I hope they do better at scanning for weapons than they do scanning for alcohol.
DaytonCruiser Posted August 9, 2011 #7 Share Posted August 9, 2011 And eventually I guess all luggage will be opened and screened, which will really slow down embarkation. Wonder what they would have done if you lied and they found more??? They will never open all the luggage, there is no reason to do that, but they will catch some smugglers and many more will slip right on by. Its just hit or miss. The OP was caught and now wants to use BV as an option, so Carnival got its point across.
Back That Aft Up Posted August 9, 2011 #8 Share Posted August 9, 2011 They are looking more now. The economy has been down for a while with no sign of rebounding, which means the funds one has dedicated for traveling is less than before, which means more cruisers will smuggle in an attempt to save a few bucks, which means if successful, less receipts at the bars. Beverage sales account for a nice portion of revenues (both for the cruise company and the bartenders/servers that receive a salary from tips from alcohol sales), so Carnival is trying to protect that. Alcohol is one of the few items the ship can control. It can not control or force you to take shore excursions offered by the ship or force you to shop at their shops. Bon Voyage, the happy medium. I pay a little more, but not as much as individual drinks would cost, for a bottle that is in my room when I first walk in my stateroom.

nlt46 Posted August 9, 2011 #11 Share Posted August 9, 2011 I got called to the naughty area, not for alcohol (as I don't drink the hard stuff) but because I had an ice chest. It had some Dr. Pepper in it and juice for the 3 year old. It was new and it rolled. Not allowed to have ice chests on board. They let me have my Dr. Peppers and juice. They even put them in a sack for me, but they took my cooler for ever and always. It folds up, but they would not allow me to have it even folded up. My bad. Won't happen again. CaraKeet Posted August 9, 2011 #12 Share Posted August 9, 2011 Never been to the naughty room, but last year they found the bottle of vodka but delivered the suitcase with the Rum. We usually do a combo of bringing a bottle of wine in our carry on, buying a bottle of scotch from bon boyage, and then seeing what makes it in out suitcase. All they did last year was deliver a note stating that "an item" was removed and would be returned the last night of the cuise. On this last cuise, the malibu made it next to my lotion and sunscreen. bobsfamily Posted August 9, 2011 #13 Share Posted August 9, 2011 Congrats on your 9th... next time VIP! Last cruise (our 8th) we just said the heck with it, bought a couple of bottles from BV and slowed down on the beer. Took 2 bottles of wine, drank them in the dining room without a "corkage fee". Drank free some of the time in the casino... wonderful time...
Litewait Posted August 9, 2011 #14 Share Posted August 9, 2011 Do you get sent to the naughty room if your luggage is unlocked? Save yourself the embarassment. If they find it they put a note in your bag saying you can pick it up on debarkation or if it's not in an unopened bottle ie:rum runners, they toss it. ;)
kujobie Posted August 9, 2011 #15 Share Posted August 9, 2011 I also got caught for the first time last year. I didn't get called anywhere. They opened my luggage and took the bottle out and replaced it with a letter.

carncruiser1964 Posted August 9, 2011 #18 Share Posted August 9, 2011 We bring 2 bottles of Asti Spumante (for the 2 formal nights) in our carry-ons and by the second day both hubby and I have reached the 1500 points in the casino to get the "drink on us" card. We spend alot of time there so that's pretty much where we drink anyway. We ordered from BV on the Glory in April and we may do that as well for the Legend in 26 days :D (or according to my countdown 25 days 10 hours 30 min)
