Bob P Posted August 23, 2011 #1 Share Posted August 23, 2011 Hi all, I'm a long-time lurker and wondered if anyone had any information about Chandris Cruises in 1985, specifically any details on the Victoria and its Southern Caribbean itinerary. I'm looking for information on a specific cruise from San Juan in August 1985 that some relatives and friends were on with us and wondered if there is any place to get a passenger list or any kind of information at all. Just taking a trip down memory lane! I'm sorry for the very general question, but if anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction. Thanks so much! monn_a Posted September 9, 2011 #2 Share Posted September 9, 2011 Chandris is now Celebrity but the Victoria I'm not sure of but they've sold some of their older ships to other lines in Europe. The X on Celebrity comes from the Chandris name (or Origins-Greek-Chandris = Chi = X) something like that...
shamu718 Posted September 24, 2011 #3 Share Posted September 24, 2011 I sailed on the Victoria from San Juan with my grandparents as a teenager. I still have the collector's spoon from the ship in my spoon cabinet. Cruise Travel magazine from July 1985 (courtesy of Google books) says that the Victoria left San Juan on Mondays and went to St. Thomas, Martinique, Grenada, Caracas and Aruba. I definitely remember going to Caracas and Grenada.
CarolynAustralia Posted November 13, 2012 #4 Share Posted November 13, 2012 I just found out today that I have actually sailed on Celebrity (sort of) before. Chandris Lines became Celebrity Cruises in the 1990s. When I was about 9 or 10 we sailed from Melbourne to Sydney on Chandris Lines Patris. The X on Celebrity Ships is actually the Greek Chi and is was on all Chandris Ships as well. I think I should go back to Celebrity and say I am a past passenger before I sail again on 19th August 2013. There is a whole book written on the cruise line "The Chandris liners and Celebrity cruises" by Peter Plowman which may answer some of your questions. Rare tofubeast Posted September 2, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 2, 2013 I sailed on Chandris' Victoria back in the summer of 1984. I was 10 at the time. It was my first real cruise. I remember we sailed out of San Juan and went to St. Thomas, St. John, Martinique, Caracas, Curacao, and I think St. Vincent. All that in 7 days! I was at my parents' home earlier today and went through an old photo album. I found these gems. The menus from our cruise and a few pics. Enjoy! Here's a link. http://www.amazon.com/The-Chandris-Liners-Celebrity-Cruises/dp/1877058475 To be clear, Chandris did not "become" Celebrity Cruises. In the late 1980's, Chandris was concerned that their existing fleet of ships (mostly converted Ocean Liners) were perceived as old fashioned and downmarket by Americans. When the formerly ultra lucrative New York to Bermuda Cruise Route was abandoned by the Home Lines, Chandris decided to jump into that market, but the quality demanded by the Bermudian Government quickly made it apparent that new ships of a much higher standard would be needed. These new luxury ships did not fit in with the existing Chandris fleet, so a new company was formed to run them......you guessed it, Celebrity Cruises. In 1997, Chandris sold their interest in Celebrity to Royal Carribean, who continue to run it as their "luxury Division".
