Myself?

Yes, No, Maybe

You still need to get to the port and back home.

You still might incur unplanned emergency expenses along the way.

You could still get hurt on an excursion in a foreign port and need to be medevaced back home.

All of these things would be covered under some type of travel insurance.

Even if I take a cross country road trip, I've started buying travel insurance. Yes, I have medical coverage, but it's all "Out of network", ambulance or evac is only to closest hospital, and no help in getting my body back home if I pass away. Travel insurance helps cover and/or suppliment these things.

Even if you're not concerned with the cancellation coverage, other coverages would be beneficial for you. Emergency medical evacuation coverage would pay if you have a medical emergency the ship doctor can't handle (appendix burst, break a leg and need surgery, etc.). Also you have other coverages such as catching up to the cruise if there are flight problems, lost/delayed luggage, ...

Back in my travel agent days I used to go on lots of free cruises -- or just paid a few bucks in taxes -- and always got the insurance. My two concerns were:

1) Emergency evacuation/repatriation. My health plan would get me to a hospital but wouldn't cover the cost of getting me home.

2) Missing the boat die to a flight delay and having to cover the expense of a last-minute, one-way flight to the next port of call, hotels, meals, etc

If I was still doing that I'd take a look at the TravelSafe Classic plan because for about $50 I can get $1,000,000 evac and $2500 missed connection coverages.

Keep in mind that when you purchase the travel insurance you do not need to purchase any cancellation coverage. In other words, for the coverage itself you can enter $0 and that way you can purchase just the medical coverage. This will substantially minimize the cost of the coverage and provide you with medical insurance which is very important should you have some type of medical issue.

The same question be asked about buying auto insurance. You may not need it, but, then again, if you get stopped or have an accident, well...:)

It's the cheapest coverage you can buy for the benefits you get. Ask your own insurance agent (home, auto). He or she might sell it. USAA does. Have fun!

No insurance is a no-no, especially if one is going to the USA. as wife and I found out. Accidents do not tell you when they are going to happen, they just do. If you have difficulty with insurance, try "Allclear", they are a specialist cruise insurer's and cover most if not all pre conditions. Even cover "Missed Ports" on their policies. Cheer's John

As a side note, it's a good idea to "insure" your trip for $1, not $0. A trip insured for $0 changes the effective date of the policy to the date of departure, instead of the policy purchase date. In turn, this can do funny things to your medical coverage on your trip if you develop a medical condition prior to departure, because you now have a "pre-existing condition" (i.e. one you developed prior to the effective date of your policy.)

Yes, this will cost a few bucks, but I think it'd be worth it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here's the big question: Does your health provider cover you when you are out of the country??

In our case, we are covered the same, with no exclusions or limitations, so if it were me, I would not buy insurance.
