When to purchase travel insurance

Does the price of travel insurance increase, the closer to the date that you sail? I'm planning on purchasing it, but keep putting it off "until the next paycheck."

The only drawback with waiting is some policies do not cover pre-existing conditions if you do not book within a couple days of your deposit

What you are risking is pre-existing, you never know what could come up. We get insured now mostly cause our moms are in their mid 80s.

I purchase as soon as I purchase the cruise since my main concern is medical. As others have said, you normally have a limited amount of time to purchase and have coverage for pre-existing conditions.

there is a thread on RCL where someone did not know you have to not only choose the insurance .. but PAY for it within two weeks (most policies) to cover pre existing.

 

so be sure and pay for it, not just the deposit on the cruise if you get it.

no the price does not go up the closer it gets to the cruise.

 

Most insurance is based on your age and how much your trip cost.

 

If you think about it the price should go down since the insurance company is insuring you for less time but that doesnt happen either.:)

With our USAA travel insurance, if you don't purchase within a few weeks of the booking date, you cannot get the cancel for any reason policy either. That's why I purchased as soon as I booked the cruise.

Thanks for all of the information. We booked way back in March, so the pre-existing conditions clause is definitely out. I was just worried that it would go up past final payment, which is in 12 days!

I don't worry about pre-existing or cancel for any reason. I only insure for medical and evacuation which would be the major cost if it happens. I carry a policy that insures me for any trips I take for a full year so I do not have to worry about when I buy it.

Elite (sold thru AAA- do not have to be a member and can be purchased on their online web site ) Is very cheap and does not have to be purchased at the time of booking to cover pre existing medical conditions. You must not have been treated or have any changes to your medical condition in the prior 60 days for it to be covered.
