pmang Posted November 3, 2011 #1 Share Posted November 3, 2011 With all the commentary about tipping the past few days, I just wanted to remind everyone that if you are requesting songs in the piano bar, it is customary to tip the performer a few bucks... This most certainly isn't covered by any auto tips... Sing along and have a blast, but if you're shouting out songs to be played, throw something in the jar.... Not trying to start an argument here... Just a friendly reminder to all. Have fun out there!!:)

Silverman Posted November 3, 2011 #3 Share Posted November 3, 2011 Wouldnt they fall under the new catagory entertainment????
pmang Posted November 3, 2011 Author #4 Share Posted November 3, 2011 There is no way that whatever percentage is now going towards "entertainment" would cover a free-for-all for requests in the piano bar... That kind of thinking is what prompted me to post this thread (and I do hope it stays friendly!)... If everyone just shouted out songs and demanded that their song gets played, It would be a mess and not much fun for anyone (think of one loud drunk shouting all night!). At any piano bar (land or sea), you throw down a couple of bucks for a song... Songs with more $$ get played sooner... Also, a song like "Piano Man" will need a higher tip as it's requested every 20 minutes (don't be the guy who requests Piano Man in a piano bar! Haha)... If you are against tipping.... Simple solution... Sing your heart out and have fun, just don't expect to pick the songs!! Just like a juke box... Want to pick a song... Put something in!! maggieworkman Posted November 3, 2011 #5 Share Posted November 3, 2011 We tipped the piano bar singer every night when we were in the piano bar. Sadly, I think we were the only ones or one of the few (depending on the night). Maggie

Bo Didly Posted November 3, 2011 #7 Share Posted November 3, 2011 People ,lets not get confused here ;)! Sometimes the piano player is a guitar player, and they should tip us .
pmang Posted November 3, 2011 Author #8 Share Posted November 3, 2011 This is of course assuming that you have a performer who can competently do the show... Sadly, that isn't the standard anymore...

That is definitely true, but if they're worth hanging around a while, they always get a tip from us, as do any of the other soloists, guitar or piano players in the atrium or casino bar, etc. that are worth staying for. pmang Posted November 3, 2011 Author #11 Share Posted November 3, 2011 So which entertainers will be part of the tipping pool? I have no idea... Just think that the entertainment staff is 40-50 people. Let's guess (guess is stressed!) that their percentage of the new $1.50 is .50.... Divide that by 50 people in the department and it's not that much. My guess (again, guess) is this money is going to social hosts and dancers who perform other duties... They are paid very little and spend a lot of hours directly with the public...

frito58 Posted November 3, 2011 #13 Share Posted November 3, 2011 One of the piano bar performers told me hardly anyone tips and that is the majority of his salary he depends on. If there any good I usually see people tip quite well , on the Glory in 09 we had Russell Villarian he is very good , the place was packed each night ,I and lot of others made sure we brought cash to tip him each night. Not saying he got rich but most of us brought more than just ones to tip him with.
Cruise-Crazy Posted November 3, 2011 #14 Share Posted November 3, 2011 I always tip the piano player whether I request a song or not. If they are not good I will not be in there so no tip...

golfadj Posted December 12, 2011 #18 Share Posted December 12, 2011 You'd think if he wasn't generating any drink revenue they'd can him. You would think so but. A few years ago a fellow in the piano bar just played what he wanted and drove everyone out. Quite a few times was just him and cocktail waitress. Than a year later sailed with him again and same thing. I know ne was brought back at least one more time after that.

golfadj Posted December 12, 2011 #20 Share Posted December 12, 2011 It seems like they need to know how to promote themselves and tips. The good ones using the piano whore style seem to do extremely well but the real good ones are mostly gone from Carnival.
Cmx3d Posted December 12, 2011 #21 Share Posted December 12, 2011 I'd say that if you are in the piano bar for a long time and think the performer was doing a good job they would certainly appreciate a few bucks even if you hadn't requested a song. But all comes down to personal preference.

Spin it however you want, that $1 only splits a certain number of ways. That 3000 to 4000 splt among how many crew? 2000? 1500? 1000? $2, $2.66 or $4. You are still straining at gnats.
