The Flow Rider at Grand Turk, does it belong to Margaritaville or Carnival?

The flow rider is one of my favorite things to do... As a Spectator :D

 

It is a hoot to watch and looks like a blast.

We are headed there this summer. My friends who went a couple of years ago and are going with us this summer told us that if we want assurance of being able to do it, then we had better book through carnival.

 

None of us have any problems doing things on our own, but DF said that when they went and did the excursion through CCL the last time, the people who just went and wanted to do it on their own, had to wait until all of the excursion people were finished. She said some of those people never got to do the flowrider because they had to get back to the ship.

 

Sometimes these places have exclusive contracts with CCL, assuring CCL that their people will get servided first. This may be the case here. So, we will be booking it through CCL.

I have been to Grand Turk a couple times when the Flow Rider wasn't used at all. I don't know why that was the case, but I would agree with momo that pre-booking through Carnival would help ensure you will get to do it.

I was just there again 2 weeks ago. That was my 5th visit in just under 3 years. The kids in our group (ages 7-16) do the Flowrider everytime. They LOVE it! It is the same price if you book it there or if you book on the ship. We always just pay when we get there. The only rule they have about running it or not running it is that there has to be at least 6 people signed up or they wont run it.

It sure is fun to watch, and last time we placed bets on how long before the first guy lost his shorts... DH won with 10 minutes... and the attendant was laughing so hard and teasing the guy by holding out his shorts then snapping them back a couple of times before finally handing them over - the guy was a really good sport... but the water must have been a little cold as he was able to *cover* himself with just one hand while reaching for his shorts! :p LOL!!

Thank you everyone for replying my post. I just wanted to find out if we didn't want to commit ourselves to the Flow Rider before getting off the ship, but rather decide if my son (it's really for him) wants to try it once we are there. We were on Oasis of the Seas in the summer and my husband tried it. (for free, included in the ship, although we have paid enough for it!!!). My son didn't go with us so he never saw it. Someone posted we can pay when we are there although it could be a long line up. I guess we will take a chance on that, we could always watch other people and be entertained for a while. By the way, is Governor Beach a lot nicer than the beach front near Margaritaville and Jack Shack, how much does it cost to take a taxi there for 5 people return. Do you need to pay for chairs and umbrellas?

Is the flow rider worth it for body surfing teenagers? Is it alot of fun or lame?

 

It's not lame exactly, we booked this through the ship for our kids when we ported at Grand Turk. But the problem is that you get very, very little time actually on the machine. If you book for 1 hour it IS NOT 1 hour you get to spend surfing (or body-surfing or whatever). The time period is split between an entire group in the following manner: The flowrider has two "lanes" and an instructor for each. Everybody in the group lines up and takes turns. When it's your turn the instructor sets you up, holds you until you seem to have your balance and then lets you go. When you wipe out your turn is over and you go back to the end of the line. It's pretty darned hard for a first-timer (unless they're incredibly athletic) to catch on quick enough to get any serious ride time in.

DaveRRT, you use cash, and if you want drinks they are very pricey! I have read and heard that if you walk down the beach a little ways, you will find a couple of local bars with much better pricing on drinks. Maybe someone on here has first hand experience...?

As I stated previously, my kids have done this a few times (most recent two weeks ago). We always pay when we get there and it is exactly the same amount as the ship. Carnival offers two prices $29 for an hour and $39 for hour and half. Margaritaville's prices are exactly the same.

Is it showing in the list of excursions as SOLD OUT, or just not listed?

 

We are sailing at the end of April, have been checking since Christmas, and it was never listed for our sailing...until yesterday :D 6 weeks out from our cruise..so keep on checking.:)
