insurance question

middle aged paraents with teenage kids (all healthy , no pre-existing conditions)

Have never bought trip cancellation insurance before as usually plan everything at last minute. However, this time, booked about 4 months in advance. Need insurance cover for two items

a) trip cancellation (in case on eof the traveller gets sick or critical illness of non-travelling grandparents) Does this require cancel for any reason clause?

b) medical coverage/evacuation in unexpected case

While second is really low probability event but former may not be

Looking at policies (insuremyrrip site), it seems that either they are too comprehensive for our needs (and hence expensive) or do not seem to provide for either of the above

Any recommendation? (no other overseas trip planned in 12 months and hence european-style annual comrehensive cover is overkill)

Appreciate any recommendation

Thnx

Most policies should cover both these things. However, if you have to cancel your trip due to a family member's or a traveling party's pre-existing condition, most companies require you to purchase insurance within a set time period (usually 14-21 days after making your first deposit on a trip).

Cancel for any reason coverage must also usually be purchased within this set time period. And, it usually will not give you 100% of your money back. Usually will refund about 75%; again depends on the coverage. It can be an expensive add-on.

I don't know where you are looking, but we usually purchase TravelGuard and just purchased a policy with Travel Safe, and did not find either one particularly expensive.

Thank you

Looed at travel guard.

while I am still away from my final deposit. The inital deposit was now 16 days ago.

any idea which company allows for 21 day period after initial deposit?

(will also try go through each policy listed on insuremytrip as well as local AAA)

thnx

Look at Travel Safe (this is from the TravelSafe Classic Plus plan):

If you have purchased this plan within 21 days of your initial trip deposit, then: 1) the plan exclusion for Pre-Existing Conditions will be waive;and 2) there is coverage for Bankruptcy or Default of an airline, cruise line, tour operator or travel supplier (other than the tour operator or travel agency from whom you purchased your travel Arrangements) causing a complete cessation of travel services more than 14 days following your Effective Date;and 3) coverage is available under the Cancel For Any Reason Benefit.

If you have insured an amount less than the cost of all travel Arrangements that are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions;the maximum benefit for trip Cancellation and Interruption will be limited to 150% of amount of coverage you purchased and there will be no coverage available under the Cancel For Any Reason Benefit

Pay special attention to the bolded section.
