Which Alaskan cruise and cruiseline

Recommended Posts

A group of us are wanting to go on an Alaskan cruise, but we are not sure

which cruise line is the best and what places are the best to go.

Can anyone give us some pointers.

We are wanting to leave out of Seattle and return to Seattle.

Also we are looking at going in September 2012.

Any suggestion would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Hey, Sheran, there are two other active threads just down the board with almost the exact same question. Please read those, and look around a little.

Be aware that "best" is a very personal and subjective question. You will get answers from MANY different directions.

Have you checked what is available that fits your constraints? That may answer you question for you...

For me, I wanted round trip, I wanted to travel east of Vancouver Island, & I wanted to go Glacier Bay - those constraints pretty much put me on Volendam... (The Wednesday departure was just a bonus.)

Princess and HAL have the most sailings and are decent lines IMHO.

I would insure you pick a ship/line and sailing that gets Glacier Bay or Hubbard as Tracy Arm is a distant 3rd as far as scenic crusing goes.

As some have already noted, best cruise line and best spots are subjective. It's a good start that you know you want to do roundtrip Seattle in September though.

What sort of ambiance do you want onboard? Will there be children travelling with you? What do you want to see in Alaska? If glaciers are high on your list, Princess Cruises goes to both the highly sought destinations Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier (no other cruise line does). Do you want to learn about Native culture? You should visit Icy Strait.

A superb itinerary out of Seattle is with HAL, including Sitka and Glacier Bay.

Find out about the specifics of the ports, on the inside passage there are only 6. Differences in glaciers as well. Realize, that round trip Seattle sailings are the least scenic, and have the most potential for rough sailing.

Finally, Sept, has the worse potential for weather of the season. Being well prepared for rain and cold will make a significant difference. By mid Sept it is dark by 7pm.
