You would think the bridge would have more damage since it sticks out further.

judyzoo Posted September 17, 2013 #5255 Share Posted September 17, 2013 Has everyone been watching the parbuckling today? It looks (to me, anyway) like the ship has been uprighted, with a slight tilt toward port.
luisrp Posted September 17, 2013 #5256 Share Posted September 17, 2013 Now that daylight is coming back to Italy more cameras are coming back to the live stream and we are able to take a closer look at the starboard damage. At first glance, it appears that most of the damage visible so far looks like flattened balconies. Those are simple overhanging areas of the decks with no structural function at all. The actual superstructure which would be the outer wall of the staterooms in decks 6, 7 and 8 don't appear to be too compressed inwards. Lido deck 9 is a whole mess since it was mostly a glass wall in those areas.
bigeck Posted September 17, 2013 #5257 Share Posted September 17, 2013 Morning All. I had to go to bed last night. I've read all the posts and watched daylight coming in on Giglio. A few things I have observed is the damage and how low in the water it's sitting. I am aware it still has to be floated, but thought it would be a lot higher. I saw the ferry leave, as I do most mornings and this morning I think everyone was taking pics as the amount of flashes going off.
luisrp Posted September 17, 2013 #5258 Share Posted September 17, 2013 I am curious as to why much of the glass from the submerged areas is missing. Must be quite a mess down there at the bottom.
bigeck Posted September 17, 2013 #5259 Share Posted September 17, 2013 Looking at the damage in daylight, it must have been quite close to splitting. I take it will be examined for cracks and strengthened before it is properly floated
bigeck Posted September 17, 2013 #5260 Share Posted September 17, 2013 I see they have a flag flying on the top deck. In Europe that means, job done

I would like to think they are designed that way. As it will be laminated the beads would have to pop to have the unit come out like that. One they start twisting the whole unit would pop out. This is standard in most buildings.
DinghyRacer Posted September 17, 2013 #5262 Share Posted September 17, 2013 Cant believe how quick it got dark. Not used to that in Scotland I suspect the cameras are turning up their light sensitivity until all of a sudden they can't turn it up any more, hence the very sudden darkness. DinghyRacer Posted September 17, 2013 #5267 Share Posted September 17, 2013 (edited) Congratulations to Titan and everyone involved in the work of getting Concordia upright, here is a link with some great pictures. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2421734/Costa-Concordia-Cruise-liner-winched-upright-lengthy-500m-operation-raise-stricken-liner-coast-Italy.html Thanks, great photos and I'm very impressed with how well the basic structure of the ship has survived. As someone posted a few pages back, it looks like balconies and walkways which are crushed - the lines of the doors and windows look fairly continuous. I hope the designers and builders are proud of their work which sadly took one stupid man a few seconds to destroy. <edit> Giglio will be a very quiet place once she has finally been towed away. clive and anne Posted September 17, 2013 #5274 Share Posted September 17, 2013 Good afternoon everyone. Well apart from my parbuckle hangover I feel fine today. The new photographs taken since dawn certainly show a lot of damage. I watched the press conference today where even a guy from Costa answered questions. It was no surprise that although there was a seat for Nick Sloane with his name plate there was no sign of Nick. I just thought that if things hadn't gone well and CC spilt, he would have been sat there on his own to answer the question. I wouldn't expect that half the people sat there this morning would be anywhere near if there had been problems. I then saw a news piece showing Nick coming out of a bar with a police escort. Now that guy is cool.
