Electronic Cigarette Policy on NCL

As a former smoker (age 15 to 27), it is my fervent hope that my children never smoke. Already lost that battle with my oldest, but I still have two young ones at home. I support legislation that bans "glamourizing" smoking in movies, tv shows, advertising. Not sure if it's the same in the US or not. You can't even buy candy cigarettes here any more - and I'm glad! IMO, "vaping" encourages the whole smoking is cool thing. As a parent, it's my choice not to expose my kids to that. Also my choice not to expose them to anyone drinking excessively or engaging in any kind of behaviors I don't want them to emulate.

The kids loved their NCL cruise - they spent their time in the kids club. Not in the nightclubs or the casino.

You are very right as a parent it is your choice to what you expose your children to, not your right to say what others do if it in no way physically affecting you. Why not just teach your children not to be followers. Thats the best lesson ever. I have smoked for for over 43 years, my DH is also a smoker. Neither one of my children smoke. I raised them to be very independent thinkers and not to follow what they thought was cool. If my kids got into trouble at least I knew it was of their own mind instead of following others and certainly not just to look cool.

BTW they still do sell candy cigarettes they are called candy sticks. And I didn't start smoking because of glamorized smoking on TV. We only got CJOH, CBC and the french station. And sorry we didn't have the money for movies.

OP please do your research carefully on traveling with e-cigs.

My research has found that there are more bans on electronic cigarettes than there are on regular cigarettes. You may want to check before taking them into ports.

They are banned in a few states, they are banned in Canada if they contain nicotine and they are illegal in some places like Mexico and other countries.

Because of the pressure from the pro-nonsmoker groups, no Government will do continued tests on them to see that they are not dangerous. And the thinking with incorrect information like the quote below only keeps them from further testing.

You are misinformed, as the other poster noted, they do not have smoke, they have vapour. Some have nicotine others don't, mine do not contain even nicotine because nicotine ones are banned in Canada.

I have a friend who has severe asthma and she let me try mine at her house, I was sitting about 2 feet from her on her sofa. She had absolutely no adverse reactions.

I'm not sure where you got your information but no states have banned e-cigs....they may have restricted their use to smoking areas only or sales within the state. I've used my e-cig every time in Mexico with no problem and even had store owners drag me in and tell me I can use it in their store.

OK I'm going to try this again, I guess you missed it the first time.

That was put as a only warning for anyone cruising to do up to date research of places they were going. Thats all it was.

My research was back last January, so sorry if I don't remember which states. They had put through whatever they call their legislature and were expecting it to pass a 2nd time for a couple of states to ban e-cigs. I will admit I did not keep up with that research to see if perhaps it was taken to court and overturned or if it never passed whatever 2nd thing it needed to.

As for other Countries I know for a fact Canada will take them if they are caught coming in (have first hand experience), the other country at that time was Mexico. There were other Countries in my research back then, but because they didn't affect my cruise they also didn't stay in my head as important. BTW if you can get them through Canada customs, no one in the country will bother you.

Since you advocate "rocking the boat", wouldn't your life be simpler if you discontinued the use of E-cigarettes altogether ?

Or would you not be getting the attention you seek by rocking the boat ?

You see----rocking the boat is a two way street, and I have no opinions either way about what you do, but I can see nothing to be gained by using E-cigarettes just to get attention.

It's unfortunate that I didn't have this encounter before spending good money in therapy. You have me figured out...just completely wrong. ;)

My goal is not to attract attention, but to be able to enjoy my cocktail of choice or a hand of blackjack with my other favorite drug without a hassle or a trip outside to the penalty box. It's really as simple as that. I would prefer to be as invisible as any guy smoking in a bar a decade ago.

There's a big difference between not allowing the importation (as in Canada) and not allowing their use. I know many Canadians who use them.

I just checked the e-cig forums again and could find no state that has managed to ban e-cigs. New York tried passing legislation but it was knocked down. Some towns have restricted their use so they can only be used in "smoking" areas. I think regulation so kids under 18 can't buy them is probably a good thing and some states are trying to regulate their sale to only those over 18.

As far as an FAA regulation I don't believe it has been passed yet but it will probably go thru this year so using an e-cig on an airplane would result in a $5000 fine. I know Jet Blue & Southwest already have it stated in their literature that you can't use them on the plane. No problem carrying them on though.

That is ridiculously stupid...Just go in the restroom...It doesn't set off the smoke detectors so they will never know if you are using it or not

I did a search but can not find any information. Does anyone have any idea what NCL's policy is for electronic cigarette use? I know Carnival allows use in any indoor area except for the main dining rooms. Was wondering if NCL has a similar policy?

Actually, Carnival's official policy is the same as that for regular cigarettes.

Well duh!!! I already said many times on here, I am Canadian and I use them with nicotine and purchase them legally. When I used the word banned, I was referring to bringing them in. But thank you very much for clearing up the differences, and the technicality, which I did make clear in the post you now quoted.

OK I'm not exactly sure why you insist on pushing this, I'm on your side for goodness sake. Whether you agree with what my findings were last January or not, I don't really care. Whether anyone has different findings 12 months later, I don't really care. I put a warning out for people to do their own research. THATS ALL!

You suggested to do the research and we both just checked again. Found out they haven't been banned yet...I don't think either of us were "pushing" anything (I know I wasn't) so you should probably not take it that way OK :) Its all good

  • 2 weeks later...

Just heard this on the news. If it is true, then this is a good reason to ban them.

A strange accident has left a Niceville, Florida man with severe injuries and burns. He was smoking an electronic cigarette when it blew up in his face. Authorities say the explosion knocked out all his teeth and part of his tongue. At this hour the man is at a burn center being treated for his injuries.

Firefighters say it was impossible to tell the brand of the electronic cigarette; this is the first time they've heard of one exploding.

Lithium Ion batteries can be dangerous, especially the cheaper "unprotected" variety. Protected batteries have a circuit that will disable the battery in short-circuit conditions. I suspect this unlucky gentleman in FL was using an unprotected battery, or the circuit was faulty.

Most manufacturers live in fear of the liability issues and source the batteries for their devices carefully. Even so, some make it through. You may recall a few years ago several Sony laptops with unprotected Lithium Ion batteries either caught fire or exploded, injuring a number of users.

Thankfully, the nanny state did not immediately ban the sale and use of laptop computers.

Fresh off the Spirit, and had no problem with my electronic cigarette. Spent a good bit of time in the Galaxy of the Stars with a drink and my ciggie, and had no complaints, and a few curious inquiries.

Good to know :D

I'm suprised that it did not explode and set your drink on fire!

*grinning*:D

With no tobacco odor and a discrete hand over the glowing end of an e-cigg, you can vape just about anywhere.

The cap off of a thin marker will do the trick. The light (besides looking funky) is only to let you know when your battery is running low anyway.

Some brands sell stealth versions that don't have the led at the end. I have a few. But they drive me crazy when they need charged because I'm used to the light blinking to tell me it needs charged.
