Good beach with waves

Most of the major beaches have fairly calm water and small roller breakers that start a few feet from shore. Most of the surfers head for the northwest and western beaches but these tend to have few amenities for beach goers.

Hull Bay just west of Magens is reknown for some of the best surfing on St Thomas. Bottom has reef and coral though. There's a small snack shop at Water Sports there but no other amenities.

On the east/south side, try Bluebeard's Beach by Bluebeard's Castle on the SE shore. You can snorkel on the left side, plenty of fish, and still get some swells rolling into the beach. But again these aren't big waves. There are facilities there and shady spots too.

It's going to depend on the weather, and the taxi drivers will probably be able to give you current beach conditions.

Morningstar Beach, which is not too far from the Havensight dock and where the Marriott Frenchman's Reef is located, is a popular beach for skimboarding. I guess it's because it frequently has rolling waves. Don't know if there's equipment rental there, though.
