Taxi from San Diego Terminal to the Zoo and back again

Later this year the Sapphire Princess will dock in San Diego for the day. We would like to spend the day at the Zoo as we didn't get to it a few years ago. Bearing that in mind:

1. Are there plenty of Taxi's available at the cruise ship terminal on arrival

2. How much would the fare be approximately to the Zoo

3. Will we have problems finding a Taxi at the Zoo to bring us back?

I know the cost of the zoo tickets so Im weighing up the pro's and con's of doing this ourselves or doing the ship excursion which will obviously cost a bit more but will include transportation there and back.

If the taxi fares are close in price to the Princess excursion we may as well just go with them

Thanks

Pete

We spent part of a day at the San Diego Zoo in 2008 prior to a cruise. While I can't comment on the number of taxis at the cruise ship terminal, there were a number in line outside the zoo entrance. When we were ready to return to our hotel, we just walked out to the first taxi in line.

We enjoyed the Zoo. It is well organized and well worth visiting.

Hi,

It is barely 3 miles or so from the port to the zoo.

There are lots of taxis in both places.

The fare shouldn't be more than about $15 or so +tip.

There's also a city bus you can take if you just walk up to Broadway and Front St.(#7),about 6 blocks up from the pier.

In addition you could take the hoho bus which goes to the zoo and some other spots in town. The hoho tour starts right next to the pier also.

Hello

How is the terrain from cruise port to zoo/balboa park area? I have located a bike rental by port, but wanted to see if it is feasable to bike there... Thanks

If you don't mind going further out of your way, I would recommend riding your bike directly east down Market or Broadway, then turning left (north) at 12th (which turns into Park) to get to Balboa Park. This is a more gradual uphill ride than going up Laurel...one of the steepest roads in San Diego. Another option, although again a little steeper than Park would be to take Grape to 6th Ave., turn north (left) to The Prado (Laurel to the left) and turn right to enter the park.

Be sure you have locks for your bikes in Balboa Park. Don't leave them unattended. Also be sure you either bring or rent helmets, as they are required even for adults in CA.
