Globally, most countries except US currency. In the western hemisphere I don't know of any country that wouldn't (maybe venezuela?). You might not get the very best exchange rate, but you can use it. And in any of these touristy areas, they are very used to accepting US$, some menus even have the US$ equiv on the menu....

Friends just returned from Grand Cayman, and I have not been so I am only relaying their experience, but they told us we would be given any change from US$ in Cayman$. My friend recommended we take small bills when on GC.

As the above poster stated...take smaller bills. You will find in some places that they may not have the US$ to make change for bigger bills. Also, in Cozumel and all of Mexico they are slowly going to a system that you can not pay more than $100 in US$.

True in most place on Grand Cayman... you can find some that will give you US dollars back but not too many, in my experience.

Also, the exchange rate isn't favorable. $1.00 US = $.80 Cayman... expensive!!!

If you are taking small bills to Cayman, take lots of them. It's $$$ there.

That may be in certain businesses but in 3 times being their we have always got US currency back as change.We also bring alot of small bills as well ,as we do on all Islands we visit

I just exchanged my money today to US and they hardly had any small bills at all. All they would give me was 1 $10, 1 $5 and 5 $1s and the rest $20s and $50's. I wasn't too happy, but what am I supposed to do! I can't just go to the store and get change in Canada. I know in Cancun they usually give you change in pesos so I'm really hoping I can break some of these bills down before we get to the ports. Is there anywhere on the ship that would be able to do this for me? All of my small bills are going to be gone in cab fare and tips before I even get on the ship!

Actually if US$1.00 = $0.75 Cayman then to buy something that cost $1.00 Caymen would cost US$1.33 (1 divided by 0.75 x $1)

1) Two of those places you listed are in the United States, so obviously they will use the US dollar no matter where you are on those islands.

 

2) Most places in the Caribbean will take US dollars. If you're in the port areas or heavy tourist areas, if you pay in US dollars, you will get US dollars back (as far as the bills go, you may get local currency coins back). This would usually apply if you're on any sort of organized tour either with the ship or independently. A lot of places will have two prices--one for local currency and one for US dollars. If you go off the beaten track on your own (i.e., hiring a private driver, using a taxi or local transportation on your own), the places you go may or may not take US dollars.

 

3) I know you didn't ask about Barbados, but I'll mention that we hired our own driver here and were away from the port area. We wanted to buy water, so we stopped at a gas station for that. They were perfectly willing to take US money, but at a 1=1 rate, which was very bad for us. Part of the reason for buying the water was also to help break a large bill so we'd have some money for the driver's tip.

I know this doesn't help you now but for the future, you can "pre order" US denominations at most Canadian banks. One time, I ordered 100-$1, 20-$5, and 10-$10 and then the rest of my money in $20s just to be sure we had lots of "small bills". I did that after one time where all I could get was $100s and $50s because they were out of anything smaller.

That would actually be 1 Cayman dollar = US$1.33

i've never been to a place that didn't.

 

but you have to realize they may be will to take the numeric value of the same when the worth is so much less.

 

and then, they will give you thrie currency for change, even though they have greenbacks in their drawer.

 

we use credit cards so the value and the exchange is always correct.
