Star to Bermuda - Entertainment? Pool?

We have just booked the Star to Bermuda in August. I have two questions.

 

Years ago we took the Dreamward to Bermuda and while in port there was no entertainment or casinos. In fact, I don't think the bars were allowed to be open either. :eek::eek: So...has this changed? Will there be things to do on board while docked?

 

Secondly, I read in a review from another website :eek: that the pool is very small and crowded. I read many of the CC Member Reviews and didn't see that mentioned. Is there just one pool? With so many sea days I want to enjoy pool time.

Haven't been on the star yet. But on past NCL cruises, including 1 to Bermuda, the ship still had day and night entertainment.

forgot to mention that they had the activities even while docked in Bermuda. The only thing I remember that was different while docked, was that you had to pay for the kids club if you used it.

I heard the Casino is still closed when in dock but I also heard that it is going to another vote. They are trying to vote in that the Casino aboard will be allowed to be open from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM when the ship is docked.

 

I hope this vote goes through. I know many people that will not cruise Bermuda just for that reason. I like the atmosphere in the casino and I do enjoy a good game of craps. Bermuda does not have gambling and at 10:00, most people are back on board anyway so Bermuda will not be losing any of its revenue. :rolleyes:

Casinos and on board shops are closed while you're in Bermuda. All other facilities are open...restaurants, bars, nightly entertainment.

 

There have been a couple of proposals in the last few years to allow the casinos to be open in port, but to date the legislature hasn't approved that action. Having followed Bermuda politics a bit (because we go there frequently) I'm not optimistic about it being approved this year either. There's too much opposition from church leaders, hotel owners (who want to be allowed to have their own casinos) and others.

The Star has a pool area aft that is for smaller kids with a pool, slides, hot tub. In the center on Deck 12 there are two slides that end in shallow water, a very small, not deep pool between them, and the main pool in front of the slides. Is it huge, no I say not, but it isn't the smallest I've seen either. I could see it being fairly crowded in a warm weather route.

Yes...don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to shop in the ship's store on the three sea days, and of course there's shopping in the stores in Bermuda if you need something or are just itching to shop.

That was the case when we cruised on the Gem to Bermuda in October. Opening the MDR for lunch while in port is now at the discretion of the ship's management according to a recent post here from an NCL spokesperson. It makes sense. In most ports there are very few passengers on board and little demand for the MDR at lunch. Other cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival follow the same practice.

Thanks. It is always good to have an idea before going. If we are close, we will usually return to the ship for lunch, but the main dining room isn't a requirement for us, so it just means we should plan our timing in case the buffet gets crowded.
