Bermuda on Summit: What Stays Closed While In Port?

We'll be sailing to Bermuda on Summit in May, and since it will be my first experience on a ship that's docked in one port continuously for a number of days, I'm wondering if the usual features that are unavailable while a ship is in port (casinos, shops, laundry, lunch in MDR) also apply in this situation?

There is no self service laundry on the Summit, but the ships will launder your clothes for you.

 

Casino and shops will be closed the entire time in port.

I've known bingo be played in port but only once

Ship shuts down a bit in port but they will still have some evening entertainment and plenty to eat and drink ;)

That is the one thing you can guarantee will still be open!

The only difference is if in Spanish ports for some reason they have to add a further tax to the drink prices, this does not affect anyone with a drinks card they just drink away as before. I have read if you embark at a Spanish port they recommend you do not buy a card, assuming you have not bought one beforehand, until after they have sailed out and they then remove the cost of any drinks you bought in the few hours up to that point but maybe someone can confirm that has actually happend for them

But is the laundering service in operation while docked? I understood that the reason self-serve was closed while in port was that ships were not permitted to dump laundry wastewater so close to the shoreline; I would think that would apply to laundry services as well...?

We had our clothes laundered while in port. I hate having sand all over everythign lol

The ship has a purification system for water and massive hold tanks. They pump out grey water when they are 12 miles out but can store water for up to 5 days we were told on an engine room trio if I remember right. It's more than laundry water that had to be held when we are in dock!

Yes. Since these cruises attract a lot of families, there are not a huge amount of Elites during these cruises. It'll most likely be held in Michael's.

If by self-serve, you are referring to the buffet restaurant, you have things backward. It is usually the dining room which is closed when the ship is in port and not the buffet (or self-serve) restaurant. I believe the reasoning behind this practice is more related to their being able to give the restaurant personnel time off and the realization that the buffet restaurant will be more than adequate to serve the passengers who remain on board or return to the ship for their meals.

There is no self-service laundry room on Celebrity ships, and regular laundry service does not shut down when the ships are in ports.

Bars are definitely open when the ships are docked in Bermuda and any other port for that matter.

LeoJay...you may have heard that self service laundries are closed while in port while on some other line. But As pointed out, X has no do-it-yourself laundry on any ship.

Anyone been on the Labor Day cruise to Bermuda. I was hoping the kids would be back in school by then (around here they start in late August)??

 

Schools start at all different times so it is difficult to tell if there will be many families on board at this time. We have sailed many times the 2nd week of Sept, and there are not many children on the ships by then.

 

Also, something to keep in mind in September, it is peak hurricane season, and if there should happen to be a hurricane heading up the Atlantic coast towards Bermuda, it may affect your cruise, and your Bermuda cruise could end up being a Canadian cruise. We are looking at booking to Bermuda the 2nd week of October, and hoping the hurricanes will stay away. I know I am rolling the dice, but with my work, we cannot go from May to Sept. If you do book, be sure to keep an eye on the weather before you leave home so if you should get diverted to Canada, you have plenty of warm clothes, as the weather will be much cooler in Canada in Sept than in Bermuda.

Oh boy, never thought about hurricanes happening that early in September. Thanks for the heads up...as much as I live Canada, I would rather go somewhere warm but better be prepared for that possibility.

Thanks, all. I'm aware that X has no self-serve laundry. I had simply assumed that the same phosphate-dumping restrictions that cause (whichever) cruiselines to close their self-serve laundry rooms while in port would apply to laundry service as well. But the issue has since been made clear to me.
