Smoking - NCL vs. RCL

Recommended Posts

We'll be taking our first NCL cruise on the Pearl next March.

I'm sensitive to the smell of smoke so when on RCL cruises I've figured out where I need to go to stay away from the smell of smoke.

Can someone who's been on the 2 cruiselines compare them for me? Are they about the same as far as smoking? Is one better or worse than the other.

Please don't flame me...I know this can be a sensitive topic:p

Thanks,

Robin

The biggest area to avoid would be the casino.... on both lines. I haven't sailed RCCL in a long time. But, I don't remember it being smokey. On NCL, they just instituted a new rule: no smoking in the cabin... balcony only (and other areas of outside decks and the casino). If you want a balcony cabin, I would book as far forward as possible so as not to get second hand smoke from someone in front of you. Other than that.... most NCL ships only have smoking on the open decks on one side of the ship. In my experience, they've enforced that rule for the most part. Others have not experienced that...

Thanks....I didn't think of the balcony. We booked midship...we may have an issue with the motion if we're too far forward. Is it fairly common to smell smoke on your balcony from other smokers in other cabins? I suppose it's just a crap shoot...

I won't flame you, it sounds like a reasonable question to me.

I haven't been on RCL or the Pearl.

NCL Smoking allowed

On balconies

In the casino

Cigar club

Smoking is allowed on open decks unless near a sports area, childrens area, eating venue or marked.

Not specific to the Pearl but on other NCL ships we've been on:

Smoking was allowed on the port side of the promenade deck, the port side of the pool deck and upper tiers at the bow of the ship.

On the Pearl I also believe a portion of the great outdoors also has a smoking section. I also have heard if you wish to play some slots that the Bliss lounge has some slot machines. The indoor lounges are all non-smoking. The casino and the cigar club are the only 2 indoor facitilities that allow smoking.

Your best bet is to look for the common no smoking signs on open decks. By the pool area they may not be marked on the wall or pillars but on the tables.

You will probably find it more so now than it would have been last year. NCL brought out their new policy of no smoking in cabins as of Jan. 1. Therefore more smokers appear to be booking balcony cabins.

A trick that someone on here recommends is bringing a small battery operated fan in case you have a smoker on the next balcony so you can turn the fan toward their balcony to keep it away from yours. They say it works great.

Thanks...that's somthing I can definitely try:) Based on your response above it sounds like other than smoking on balconies the 2 lines are very similar with their smoking policies.

I don't think RCL allows smoking on balconies. Only difference for me is I can't afford a balcony on RCL:rolleyes:

RCL does allow smoking on their balconies, so the policies are quite similar. Sometimes there is a smoker on the next balcony when I sail, but often they are nonsmokers.

Celebrity has a more restrictive smoking policy...no smoking on balcony or even on the casino. I think Princess recent disallowed balcony smoking, IIRC...somebody please correct me if I am wrong.

Only if the cabin up-wind from you is smoking on the balcony... otherwise, it shouldn't be an issue...

On my first NCL cruise last year, I took a small battery powered fan, just in case there were smokers on the balcony next to mine (to blow the smoke away from me). Thank goodness I didn't have to use it, but it will always be in my suitcase on a cruise line that allows smoking on the balconies.

We have been on two NCL cruises since NCL changed its smoking policy. Both times, we had midship balconies, and we did not feel that there were any more smokers booking these cabins than usual. The smoke was not a problem.

They are pretty much the same. Sorry.

Just please don't act like the wretched witch I had next door on my last cruise, She came outside screaming to me about the smoke from my balcony. I politely told her it was freestyle, she got nastier with me so in truth i purposely blew my cigarette smoke towards her balcony for the remainder of the cruise. Had she not been as nasty as she was I never would have done that, in fact I would have done the opposite.

When you treat people crappy it has a way of coming back to you.

FYI she spent most of the week screaming at her husband for trivial things, I was surprised he didn't throw her off the balcony.

Smokers should keep there problems to themselves, 2nd hand smoke is just as dangerous as smoking. Don't make your problem everyone elses.

I understand what you are saying. But do you think it is right that this neighbor in the next cabin came out to blast the person who was smoking in the appropriate location according to the guidelines set out by the cruiseline?

When I read the posts by all of the people who are bothered by smoke, how do you manage to be around all of the cologne and perfume.

Confused!

you are correct too much perfume is horrible...however..

cologne and perfume do not fill a room with carcinogenic substances that can be seen in the air...and inhaled into the lungs....

I know you know this already.

also...I do not associate with any smokers..simple as that..that is how I avoid smoke..I don't know any smokers...won't befriend any smokers....and should some relative smoke..and be invited to my house...they cannot smoke in my house....and if they can't handle the withdrawal...let them leave..no problem at all.

being forced to be exposed to smoke fumes can drive people crazy....because they know how dangerous it is..and FWIW...her misery was probably caused by the inconvenience..uncomfortableness...and all around smell that she had to endure.

you should be embarrassed at your actions in blowing the smoke her way....it is just this sort of stuff that causes non smokers to overreact

I love when people condone one persons really bad behavior over another persons really bad behavior, just because they think that they can give just cause. Bad behavior is bad behavior no matter what the reason.

IMO if that person already knew that they may "be forced to be exposed to smoke fumes that could drive them crazy" and didn't want that, perhaps they should not have booked a place that is well noted allows smoking. Shame on them.

And if they did not research enough to know that. Shame on them.
