I'll have to compare to see....How about the 1A's on the Dream or Magic?...since they are the two newest ships that would be more compareable to Epic/Breakaway.

Having sailed both lines, IF I were solo and IF there wasn't a drastic difference, the choice would still be easy to choose the Epic or Breakaway. And I still think much of what you pay is determined on when you book.

 

I have sailed Epic twice, but the issue raised was price and I had to pay much more to sail on Epic. I could have had a 1a with a Porthole for much less on Dream

If Epic would do a different Caribbean run, I would consider sailing her again.

Great! You have sailed Epic...SO is the product a good comparison (Epic Studio vs 1A on Carnival??)

If Epic costs more, is there a valid reason? Is the lounge and all that worth the extra you pay to sail that ship solo??

What the OP is saying is Carnival only charges 200%.

 

All the other lines have deals less than 200% quite often. I can find cheaper deals on other lines any day of the week that are less than 200%.

 

Well...if the starting price is 300% of a base, then it's easy to play tricks isn't it ...if you start out WAY higher then you can say a lesser % right? Just sayin' FireGirl, you know I love ya but it is what it is:)

I've not gone through the thread but I see you've booked The Breakaway so I guess you've figured out the solo cabins. The Epic has these as well, however I'm afraid that it's 200% or just about for the other ships in the fleet. (Unless you're going through a TA that might be able to finagle something I've never minded paying that though because the price was so good I still wound up saving on an all land based vacation. Of course everyone has to make their own choice. Bon voyage wherever you go and with which ever line you choose any vacation is a good vacation! :D

Much to do about nothing....half of my cruises have been solo and I have a 14 day eastbound canal coming up in Oct. for 1600.00 (m)

I simply do the booking on a cruise I like and then if I like the price, I go.

January 21st, I ended up with a balcony on the Voyager, 7 day solo for 676.81 booked through RCCL. Just happened to hit it right.

I enjoy cruising enough to check them all out and see what comes up.

Also...none and I mean none of my cruises have been 200%!! Do the work...it pays.

My point is to take advantage of the studios you are limited to where epic and breakaway sail. So if I want to sail to Hawaii or Alaska or western Caribbean the studio cabins aren't an option.

 

If would be nice if epic did a west/east run like she did in her first Caribbean season.

Although the Epic does offer single studio cabins (or something like that) at 150%.

 

Epic studio cabins are more than paying 200% on Carnival. The solo experience is worth it though. Celebrity did not charge 200% for my upcoming December cruise. I don't get hung up on what percentage I'm paying...I'm just looking for a fair price. That said, Carnival still usually has the best price regardless if percentage.

wonder why they did away with the share a cabin program they had years ago.

I think it is a nice gesture and last minute kind of compromise on the arguement...I think Holland America still does it...but the stanger deal many solos/singles would not want or do.

 

I know 2 can spend more money..but one does not eat the 2 peoples's amt..especially the higher percentage of solo travellers..women..not sure of that % think tis true...

 

Anyway..i am taking a break from Carnival but still think of it fondly and it often is the best deal..it never is apples to apples..lots of variables...sure would love a 700 dollar solo balcony on RCCL...whoever said that..was that a full week...sweet!!

Like the 'idea' that Carnival is always cheap, the idea that NCL is always not cheap is very false.

It all depends on WHEN you book.

I book my cruises early on and they are always at a great rate...no matter what line. I was just looking at my 11 day southern caribbean cruise for Feb 2013 on NCL and we are paying $114 per person/per day for a mid ship balcony cabin, PLUS we will have $450 in OBC.

I do hope you are still thinking of 'our' early November 2013 jaunt on the Epic:D Just have to find time to make the call!!

 

BTW, I agree about booking early. I always do as well (as judged above since I'm looking at a cruise over a year out) and the prices almost always go up after I book.

The solo studio cabins on Epic and Breakway with no single supplement are still more expensive than a solo 1A cabin @ 200% on Carnival. Even moreso if Early Saver is used.

 

I'm going to also assume that your comment is accurate, because it does sound correct to me as well.

 

But . . . last year I posted details of two sailings I did on NCL where the ships/itineraries/dates were very comparable, and I was able to sail solo in a balcony cabin on NCL for less than the cost of an inside on CCL. As halos said, it's all about "When", and I took advantage of some great promotions that were available for a limited time.

 

And, just as a personal opinion . . . I should have to pay more for my studios on EPIC and Breakaway, because the amount I'm paying is for the overall experience, and when I compare those, one (again, for me) is leaps and bounds above the other.

MSC and Costa usually have real good single rates and they are not just inside cabins, ncll tends to be ok..thank God i gamble so even paying 200% on carnival i can usually get a casino rate that comes out being a decent deal...i do agree it sucks carnival has removed single rate especially since that was the original intent of 1A's..oh well. maybe one day they will change this back as all things are always subject to change:cool:

when do you not pay double on RCL? When i was going to cruise solo last year on the freedom of the seas, I had to pay double (as you would on carnival) and then when my mom said she could go, i had to pay a $50 fee PLUS the difference in fare, the original cost for me alone was $2000, adding my mom costed me an additional $1500 for a total of $3500....:eek: for crappy food and service i wont be sailing them again

Something wrong with this. RCL does not charge a fee to add a person up to 24 hrs before sailing and the rate does not change when you do it. They simple add port and taxes.

They had a reduced rate for 1a cabins. They decided to go a different direction, its doubtful they will return, since they are selling cabins AND making more money.

 

Those of us that sail solo, just have to look for bargains.

 

None of the cruise lines are truly solo friendly. They all want to put the max number of pax in the cabin/ship. Just like all companies would rather not even have sales, but its essential to sell slow moving product.

 

The studio cabins/living room weren't even initially designed for solo passengers, it was set up for young hip couples. When that marketing plan didnt work, they re-purposed the cabins into supplement free for singles. I do have to hand it to NCL, most people dont know the history, so it does appear they set this all up for single pax.

True, because the perceived extras on Epic/Breakaway may not interest a person that books for ports, rather than ship experience.
