No smoking in the Crow's Nest on the Zuiderdam -- mainly because of the Explorations Cafe, Library and Internet also being there.

From HAL's site:

Is Smoking Allowed On Board?

Our smoking policy reflects our commitment to the comfort of all of our guests. Presently, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and all other indoor areas are designated non-smoking with the exception of:

  • Casino
  • Northern Lights Disco (ms Eurodam, ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Westerdam & ms Zuiderdam only)
  • Seaview Bar (except that smoking is not permitted in the Seaview Bar on the ms Maasdam, ms Ryndam or ms Statendam)
  • Sports Bar
  • Crow's Nest (except that smoking is not permitted in the Crow’s Nest on the ms Eurodam, ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Westerdam or ms Zuiderdam)

While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed.

The lounges on the Zuiderdam where smoking is allowed are the Northern Lights Disco, and the nearby Sports Bar. The casino also allows smoking, and is in the same area.

The Sports bar allows smoking. Ruth mentioned Northern Lights, but there was no-one smoking there whenever we were in there - just lucky I guess:rolleyes: And only half of the casino was smoking, and you had to be playing, you couldn't just hang out in there to smoke. And that's about it.

Thank you everyone for your replies!

We are looking at the Zuiderdam for Alaska 2013. Just back from trying NCL - while the Mediterranean is fabulous, HAL still has the best dining on any of the cruise lines we`ve tried. :D + all the reviews rave about Glacier Bay... another plus for HAL. Off to the Alaska boards......;)

Alaska, and especially Glacier Bay, is great! And we found the food in the MDR on the Zuiderdam to be excellent, and the crew is wonderful. Enjoy your cruise!

Pinnacle was the best of the ones we have eaten at. I know there shouldn't be a difference but there was. It was excellent except for the last night, they kind of fell apart for some reason. I always get a souffle the last evening of the cruise in the Pinnacle and when they brought to me it had already fallen. Very sad looking. I made a comment but our steward didn't even flinch. Oh well.

Back to the OP's question about smoking in lounges on Zuiderdam. I know the policy states that smoking is allowed in the Sports Bar and others have been able to smoke in there (as have I on previous cruises). But last July the bartender told me smoking was not allowed in the Sports Bar and that I would need to go into the casino (just around the corner) to smoke. I'm not sure why on my particular cruise the Sports Bar was deemed nonsmoking, but it certainly was.

That's really odd. People were smoking in there on my cruise last month. I stopped to say hi to a friend and had to leave because of the smoke. (I have COPD)

i would've ask for a supervisor to get clarification. the corporate policy is clearly stated where smoking is and is not allowed. as far as i know, a bartender is not allowed to overrule corporate policy. i'm willing to follow the rules, but i do not think the rules should be changed in the middle of the game.

The Evil Twin and I just got off the Z'dam a couple of weeks ago and the forward half of the Sports Bar (the side with the actual bar, barstools, etc.) was smoking. The small sitting-area toward the aft was not but I can't imagine any non-smoker would have been comfortable enough to hang out there since it was so so close to the smokers (like me -- boo, hiss, smokers!).

It really wasn't that big of a deal to me although I did consider it. I heard that bartender tell another passenger the same thing when he asked for an ashtray. It was a detriment for the bartender because I ended up spending most of my time at the Sea View bar so he lost out on lots of tips. ;)

granted my confusion is not an unusual situation -- however -- the last time I was on both the Maasdam and the Ryndam -- the SeaView bar was a service window on the Navigation deck -- the starboard side of the deck was smoking and the port side was non smoking -- was I so totally confused about the ships???
