We have always found that wandering around and looking at menus in the window led us to a great restaurant.

Does such a thing even exist? Everybody tells me how expensive Venice is.

Go the the Venice forum of tripadvisor. On the left side of the page you'll see 'Venice Restaurants'.

Or borrow a Venice travel book from your library; they will advise you of restaurants in various areas, what they serve, price, etc

I reviewed three restaurants on my travel blog

 

thumbs up to ai barbacani and gam gam

 

thumbs up for lunch only at tiziano

 

In general, just get away from San Marco plaza and you should be able to find reasonably priced meals
