FLL-post cruise-will rent car but flight out not till 8 pm

We are willing to drive up to 1.5 hours to go to somewhere interesting after we disembark. Have already done Sawgrass and movies and the beach--anywhere else you would recommend within that driving distance? Our luggage will be locked in our trunk.

We are two active 60 yr old sisters who are cruising without our DHs or kids--hurrah! Thank you!

Do you like to shop? I'd go to the Aventura Mall, which is just 8 miles or so south of Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport down Route 1(Federal Highway). If you like to gamble and shop, I'd go to Gulf Stream Park where there is a casino, some nice shops, and a few good restaurants. It is about 6 or 7 miles south of the airport (FLL) down Route 1. Not sure what you are looking to do, as you weren't specific other than the distance/time you were wiling to travel. I can spend 5 or 6 hours in these two places, so you could possibly kill enough time before your flight without having to drive 1.5 hours from the airport.

I've taken airboat rides before and there is no comparing the type and amount of wildlife seen on a airboat as opposed to at Shark Valley or Royal Palm in the Everglades (and the entrance fee to the National Park is dirt cheap - $10 per car I think - compared to taking an airboat).

 

You'll spend about 2 hours round trip driving to either Shark Valley or Royal Palm - that can be done easily in a day especially if you disembark early. While Shark Valley is actually a little closer, you need more time to see it (they have a great 15 mile tram ride that takes a couple of hours if I remember correctly and does cost extra). Royal Palm is 5 minutes past the Ernest Coe Visitor Center (stop and watch the 15 - 20 minute movie). Royal Palm has a one mile or slightly less boardwalk that is fantastic (and no extra charges). You can 'do that' faster than Shark Valley. If you go to Royal Palm make sure you stop at Robert Is Here (you'll can't miss it on the road between Route 1 and the Park entrance) and have a milk shake - key lime is my favorite!

Two weeks ago, one of the tour guides on one of those airboats had his hand bitten off by a gator. They shot the gator and retrieved the hand, but the surgeons were unable to reattach same.

That is a rarity....use your head and keep your hands inside the boat

 

If you want a nice/close and very LOCAL airboat tour you can get it for 10 bucks....with the 2 for one deal on sunny.org

 

I go here at least once a year, pretty rustic/old Florida,they have the usual gator talk/exhibit....a huge gator is the resident "king'

the usual corny "pose with a little gator" stuff also a nice little area with rescued animals of all sorts, Florida Panthers etc

 

Nice rustic, laid back, not real commercial...you can take a picnic lunch out there, they have covered tables very mellow

 

For $10 you can't go wrong...this is also very near Ft Lauderdale, take 595 west

(some of the gator places are much further out on Alligator Alley or much further south /Miami/Dade etc)
