Liberty of the Seas

I am trying to decide which tours I should book through the cruise, which I should book privately, and which places I should just explore on my own.

I already signed up for a private tour in the French Riviera.

Does anyone have recommendations for what to do in Toulon, Rome, Florence, and Amalfi Coast in terms of tours vs. DIY?

Thanks!

Forget the ship's tours, you see half as much because they only move at the pace of the slowest person in the group - usually someone on a cane or walker!

Instead, go to your ship's roll call and setup private excursions with other passengers - in the end, it will cost you half as much as the ship's tours and you will see twice as much and can tailor your tours to suit your interests!

For Toulon:

We did this tour:

It was awesome!

For Rome:

Outstanding tour with a guide who really had so much interesting information and made the most of the day.

For Florence:

Florence is nice, but it would be better to stay there and visit the museums. Otherwise, if you go to the museums, then you don't see anything of Florence. I prefer to go to the Tuscan Countryside and visit the charming hill towns.

Voturri (buy alabaster)

San Gimignano (my favorite!)

Montelpulcianno

Sienna

Amalfi Coast

You can do Pompeii AND the Amalfi Coast in one day if you choose

Most people on this board will say DIY. But that doesn't mean that will work best for you.

I would first do the research by deciding what you want to do and then seeing how the tours compare to private excursions to doing this on your own.

For Livorno I would either visit Florence or Pisa but if it was me I would visit Florence.

Rome would take weeks to see. So you have to decided do you want to do more of a highlight tour or see a few places such as the Vatican Museum and the Colloseum. I would do a tour of some kind there as your time is very limited. Either a ships tour or a private tour. For a private tour take a look at Rome Cabs and their web site is http://www.romecabs.com

We sailed to the western med this past August on LOS..Not usually being a fan of ship excursions the DIY can work out very well..Toulon, was a Sunday and not much open we just walked through the farmers market this was really a rest day for us to re-coop from our flight and get ready for the ports ahead....Nice, Monaco & Monte Carlo we used ship DIY....Pisa & Florence used ship DIY (a quick 1 hour stop at Pisa then having this much time to explore Florence on our own ended up being our favorite....Rome & Vatican we used RomeInLimo for a private tour.....Naples, we did DIY for Pompeii (onboard guide was also our walking guide) & Sorrento we were on our own...These all worked out very well for us for our first visit..Not having to worry about public transporation and having the luck of some great guides onboard the bus that gave us so much history, maps and information made these port stops really easy..A time and place to meet made doing it on our own a good option for us..
