How do we liven up this board?

I watched an old PBS program on the Inside Passage yesterday, and it brought back good memories even though at only 30 minutes the program couldn't do any of the ports justice.

I've now been on the Durango and Silverton Railroad (actually twice) and the White Pass/Yukon Railroad. These are supposedly two of the most spectacular rail trips in the world, and I can believe it.

Hope everyone has had a good day.

Hi

There are 2 authors who write Alaskan mysteries--Sue Henry and Dana Stabenow. One of Henry's mysteries takes place on an Alaskan small ship cruise. One of Stabenow's books was an ebook freebie on Bookbub a couple of months ago. Bookbub is on facebook and they have a website.

You're Welcome. I also like trains and have enjoyed both of the 2 that you mentioned. Another that I like is Great Smoky Mtns RR, Bryson City,NC.

If you like National Parks, try Nevada Barr mysteries.

I've read all the Nevada Barr mysteries and loved them. I've taken the Dillsboro=Bryson City route of the Great Smoky Mtns RR which is now closed but also the Bryson City - Nantahala route.

I was watching a Rick Steves program today as he rode through Switzerland on the Glacier Express which I've also taken. But even better was the Bernina Express from Chur, Switzerland over the Alps down to the edge of Italy. Would love to do that one again.

My late husband and I traveled through Switzerland and Germany by train. We traveled through England and Scotland by train. My DD and I traveled through Austria and another part of Germany by train. I been from Roanoke to Chicago when there was still a direct line, have crossed the US on the Empire Builder one way and back on the ??? which was the other route across the northern US, have been at various times on the Crescent so that I have been (not one trip) from NY to New Orleans on the Crescent - the first time when it had not yet joined Amtrak. I've been on the Coast Starlight from Oakland to L.A., on one of the eastern trains from Hamlet to "Orlando," and even in 1969 from Winston-Salem to Asheville before that line closed. I love train travel.

But, my favorite is probably the Bernina Express.

I'm looking at the websites. Where is the Pisgah Bridge near Statesville? I have lived all over NC since I moved here as a young woman and don't know where it is.

I'll have other questions after I look some more.

I.m pleased that you like my pictures. There is a California travelogue in Collected articles, cb tours. Above cb location website gives directions to all cbs. Some of those on the list are faux cbs--designated w. a letter after#.

There are only 3 authentic cbs in NC. California travelogue has a picture of only redwood cb in US, possibly the world.

I am just checking back in... I just got home from Las Vegas last night; went for a conference from work, had a blast. There are lots of things to catch up on here, you all have been very busy, but you all sound well. This is good. A couple of things from me;

-My favorite part of my Alaskan trip was the train ride from Anchorage to Denali-very beautiful

-Carol, what is a wine cake?

-still don't like oysters....

-I have been on HAL and did like it, I think it depends on what you are looking for. It sounds crazy but one thing I liked is having laundry room with a regular size ironing board :o. (I am ironing dependent which I do realize is a sort of illness, though we drink wine on the ship while ironing (ironing wine we call it)).

-I have also been on RCCL; is the Brilliance RCCL?

I think every cruiseline has its drawbacks of some sort; IMO.

Hope all are good today. :D

LV sounds exciting - we are going to Reno this Fri to Sun -- just to hang out - we don't gamble that much - I know it's not as flashy as LV but it'll do - it is a 3 hr drive for us --

wine cake is cake made with some wine in it - Sherry wine - old old recipe - it's a box cake mix, instead of water or milk, you add sherry wine and nutmet - it'll taste like an eggnog cake - very easy to make -

my husband is Mr Wrinkle Free -- he has to steam everything when we are onboard - he'll ask me what I am wearing for the day, get my outfit and steam it!! ha!ha! a lot of my evening clothes are material that do not need ironing anyway- he hates a lot of wrinkles and I tell him, we are traveling - but he says, no excuse!! so HAL sounds good for that - !!

Yes, the Brilliance is RCCL - that's where I met Beth - love that ship - I can say it's been my favorite - even tho' I have been on the Serenade and Radiance, her sister ships, I am partial to the Brilliance maybe cuz of some of the staff who are always there =

I think cruise lines and peoples' opinions of them -- likes and dislikes of ships/services/-- are all personal preference ...

I watch DWTS - anyone out there who does ?

Next cruise is Panama Canal. Next cb/rr trip not sure. Quebec maybe. Also, we sometimes detour to see cbs on the way back from NC visiting grans. We saw a marble cb in Russia 2 months ago, but Joe Nelson hasn't put my travelogue on his website. He put it in the VCBS newsletter(which I joined in thanks for the assistance in locating cbs from his website).

We have been to about 550 cbs and many scenic rr. Liz has 3 scrapbook albums of cbs. She was a religious viewer of scrapbook shows.

BTW, our favorite cruise line is Celebrity. We like their no smoking policy. Our favorite river cruise line is Vantage--same reason. Smoking only allowed on part of open top deck, both lines. We were on 1 RCI cruise and did not like walking thru smoky casino.

If you want the short Russia travelogue, my email keatingfamily at roadrunner dot com

Also, check out letters section on his website-- my comments/pics of Bulgaria's only cb

I think Reno sounds lots of fun; I only gambled a bit but did not win; big shocker.

I'll have to try the wine cake recipe. I love to bake and love wine, how perfect for me!

I love your husband for being in the wrinkle free club :).

I agree that all of the cruiselines are personal preference, I just have not found a perfect one...yet. I am willing to keep looking though.

No DWTS for me, not really a reality show fan. I must admit that I look occaisionally on the 'net' to see what is going on.

Carol-so far you have given me two recipes-any more classics you would like to give? I am always open to try a new classic well proven recipes. Anyone else have something yummy to share?

i like to say that smoke doesn't bother me, but yes, my eyes start to tear - and then I start to cough since I have asthma - some of the casino's have the no smoking area - but the smoke still filters thru the smoking area side so I smell it - same with some of the lounges on the ships - one side is for smokers and the other side still reaks of smoke cuz it sure travels real fast!!! carol

What Dresses!!? ha!ha! they must not spend awhole lot on those revealing costumes - but hey... the gals look good in them so go for it - I love Brook's dresses - she has the figure for some of those very top skimpy outfits of hers -

Pam looked awful and yes, her personality wasn't all that great -

on another note - sorry that Andy Williams passed - I love his songs, him and his shows... both hubby and I play his CD's a lot - smooth voice...

I really like Kirstie and she did well last time - however, this time, competition with the Champs may be too much - I love her tho' and think she is cute - she is a crack up - I guess that long long Kiss she gave Tom was for his winning the Emmy - I didn't know that til last night -

I also like PitBull -- my taste in music goes from one point to the extreme other!! Justin B... not really-
