Rare Tom-n-Cheryl Posted July 27, 2012 #1 Share Posted July 27, 2012 I received an email from Carnival last night indicating that our upcoming 3-night Sensation (Thursday-Sunday) will be overnighting in Nassau. The letter applied to all 3 night sailings during the month of August. A few months back Carnival had discontinued the overnight stay for that itinerary for reasons which were not really clear. I felt it had something to do with their previous practice of opening the casino while it port on Friday night, but who knows! Tom

golfadj Posted July 27, 2012 #3 Share Posted July 27, 2012 Wonder why they do this? Given choice of shipboard entertainment or spending the evening in Nassau gotta think the ship wins every time.

I've never done cruise shorter than 7 nights, but I wish more overnight stays were offered at certain ports. I would love to overnight at Grand Cayman (not practical with tendering, though) so as to not have to hurry back to the ship. We recently cruised to Bermuda (on RCI) and enjoyed the overnight there. I'm more interested in the ports than entertainment on the ship (not saying I don't enjoy sea days and the entertainment on the ship, just that my primary reason for cruising is for the port stops). Loved Bermuda and sure want to go back but next time at the other side of the island. 1.5 days (one overnight) was enough for us...enough time to take a taxi tour (4+ hours...we coverage a lot of area), spend a little time at the beach, enjoy a couple of meals on the island, etc. With the overnight, you don't have to hang out close to the ship for nightlife - though Bermuda isn't a big party place anyway. We did like Bermuda, but want to see more of the Caribbean next.
Rare richstowe Posted July 27, 2012 #8 Share Posted July 27, 2012 Wonder why they do this? Given choice of shipboard entertainment or spending the evening in Nassau gotta think the ship wins every time.Would you rather have Nassau and Freeport instead of an overnight in Nassau? Not sure if thats what the previous itinerary was but if the choice is between those 2 ports or an overnight in Nassau, I'd rather stay overnight. Freeport makes Nassau look good.

Freeport makes Nassau look good. I was pleasantly surprised when we spent 6 nights on Grand Bahama. It gave us time to check out pretty much all the beaches, and we found some very nice ones. But our last cruise stop, we didn't leave the port area in Freeport. I'd probably prefer an overnight in Nassau to the stop in Freeport also. There are itineraries with both and will avoid like the plague as we have been to Nassau quite often and once in Freeport was enough.
elenaW Posted July 27, 2012 #11 Share Posted July 27, 2012 I'm on the last 3 day on the Sensation to Nassau in August - no email, and on the Carnival site they are still showing in port 12 pm to 8 pm. Wonder why?

Rare Cruisegirl6 Posted July 27, 2012 #14 Share Posted July 27, 2012 I can't stand being in Nassau for just few hours neverless overnight. Nothing to do there and the ship must be dead too.
emelvee Posted July 27, 2012 #15 Share Posted July 27, 2012 Sure the Bahamas aren't as exotic as some other locations, but we've enjoyed our trips there. Beats working!

Rare Tom-n-Cheryl Posted July 27, 2012 Author #18 Share Posted July 27, 2012 Nassau night is their "cruise elegant" night... which translates to PRIME RIB, so you can bet I'll be back onboard for that! After dinner, since they'll likely have the casino open -- I see no reason to get off the ship. That's the smoothest you'll ever enjoy when playing in a shipboard casino (when they're docked)! Mrs.C05 Posted July 27, 2012 #21 Share Posted July 27, 2012 I wouldn't want to be in Nassua overnight unless I was ON the ship! It's sketchy as it is walking back to the boat from Senor Frogs past 9pm. Sent from Tapatalk
Rare Tom-n-Cheryl Posted July 27, 2012 Author #22 Share Posted July 27, 2012 I thought they couldnt open casino when in port? The Sensation has, for years, opened up the casino at 7pm while docked in Nassau (when overnighting). When they announced earlier this year that they were no longer staying overnight, I assumed it had something to do with the casino --- perhaps the local government removed their ability to do that. Carnival came out with the classic excuse that the changes were for "operational reasons" or some other cryptic wording... ;) Tom

marshhawk Posted July 27, 2012 #25 Share Posted July 27, 2012 That was our first cruise and it got us stuck on cruising! Great to hear they are overnighting again, hope this means that they will stay until 10 again on the Fascination next year.:o
