PY33 Posted July 30, 2012 #2 Share Posted July 30, 2012 No - you'll have to buy all of your meals unless you opted to purchase them as part of your cruise tour. You can buy meals on the trains and there are several restaurants at each lodge. The lodges are in the middle of nowhere so they have a monopoly position, and we found that the quality was not nearly so good as the meals on the ship. sunsetbeachgal Posted July 30, 2012 #3 Share Posted July 30, 2012 And figure on paying 50% more than what a comparable meal would cost in the continental US...Denali Lodge has other food options within a walking distance...and we ate at other restaurants in Fairbanks...mcKinley lodge has no options other than at the lodge unless you shuttle into Talkeetna.. tcs1366 Posted August 21, 2012 #5 Share Posted August 21, 2012 I had heard that some of those lodges or hotels offer buffets, which could help keep the costs lower, is this true?
Loonbeam Posted August 21, 2012 #6 Share Posted August 21, 2012 I can't recall any in lodge, but some have venues nearby that do (there was a salmon bake buffet near Denali that offered a shuttle. There was one restaurant we didn't try at Denali that might have been a buffet. I had heard that some of those lodges or hotels offer buffets, which could help keep the costs lower, is this true? biker1972 Posted August 21, 2012 #7 Share Posted August 21, 2012 The land portion of a cruisetour is the diet part, either before or after the cruise. :o In Alaska, with high restaurant prices, I'm forced me to to do what I should be doing on board, cutting back! I sure hope that the breakfast buffets at the Princess lodges are way over priced compared to a bowl of oatmeal and a dry English muffin on my upcoming cruise. Pia1913 Posted August 21, 2012 #8 Share Posted August 21, 2012 I had heard that some of those lodges or hotels offer buffets, which could help keep the costs lower, is this true? We stayed at four different lodges. There were no buffets.
paddingtonbear Posted August 22, 2012 #9 Share Posted August 22, 2012 This link gives you the menu and pricing for one of the Alaska princess lodges to give you an idea. Princess lodge in Fairbanks and Denali Princess Lodge have other restaurants near by. http://www.princesslodges.com/amenit...ing-salmon.htm I think I have read that the cruisetours have a restricted menu to choose from. Someone else here will correct this if it is wrong.
Loonbeam Posted August 22, 2012 #10 Share Posted August 22, 2012 Last checked, there were no restrictions generally, although on an escorted tour where the meals are included I could see some of the priciest items having an upcharge. buffalobobcat Posted August 22, 2012 #11 Share Posted August 22, 2012 There was a breakfast buffet at the Denali Lodge, but it was the worst meal I had on the whole trip. I would not advise it.
caribill Posted August 22, 2012 #12 Share Posted August 22, 2012 I think I have read that the cruisetours have a restricted menu to choose from. Someone else here will correct this if it is wrong. Last checked, there were no restrictions generally, although on an escorted tour where the meals are included I could see some of the priciest items having an upcharge. On the Connoisseur tour, the included meals at the lodges have no restrictions other than something like "one non-alcoholic beverage, apetizer or soup or salad, one entree, dessert". So if you want soup and salad, it would cost extra. If you wanted the most expensive entree, it is included. I calculated that one dinner I had would have cost about $80 with the included 15% tip. Breakfast buffet at the Fairbanks lodge was priced at $14.99.
Rare geoherb Posted August 22, 2012 #14 Share Posted August 22, 2012 I brought us an assortment of dried fruit, nuts, and granola bars for breakfast on our cruise tour earlier this month. It worked out great and saved us a ton of money. We ate at the less expensive restaurants at the lodges and lunches averaged around $25 for the two of us and dinners around $40. There was one meal included on our tour--at the riverboat landing in Fairbanks. The beef stew was good, but the rest of the meal wasn't great.
