Rare BecciBoo Posted August 2, 2012 #2 Share Posted August 2, 2012 What they consider port talks are nothing more than advertizements for Diamonds International. The talks you are referring to are almost non existant these days. There are a few especially on Alaska cruises. But I've yet to see anything offered in the Caribbean on any of ours. I usually look at Compass to see if it's offered.
welshrich Posted August 2, 2012 #3 Share Posted August 2, 2012 Yes, I have seen them listed in the daily cruise compass, I think they tend to be more focused on shopping or selling tours though
stevea36 Posted August 2, 2012 #4 Share Posted August 2, 2012 Does RC have port talks on the ship the night before the next port to discuss the next port? Our may 10th explorer cruise had someone who spoke about the ports. This may be something new as I had never seen it before. This was NOT the shopping and port talk, but more about the history of the area, eyc. Steve
Clarea Posted August 2, 2012 #5 Share Posted August 2, 2012 We also had port talks on our transatlantic last October. However, I usually don't see these offered (except for the port/shopping talks) on typical 7 day Caribbean cruises.
Rare annmarz Posted August 2, 2012 #6 Share Posted August 2, 2012 On our recent Enchantment cruise to Bermuda and the Northeast, there was a couple who gave 3, I believe, talks with slides on the ports. They were excellent. Lots of practical information and tips, recommended sites, etc. RCCL should provide more of this type of thing!
MeHeartCruising Posted August 2, 2012 #7 Share Posted August 2, 2012 On back-to-back Med cruises last summer, Royal Caribbean had guest speakers to talk a couple times who were retired college professors. They were passengers on the ship and not your typical "paid" crew member. Although they might have been paid some salary, I suspect they were probably given free or reduced fare on the ship in return for holding a few hour-long port talks. They were mostly historical in nature about how the various port civilizations came about and the major physical sites you might want to see when off the ship. They were not shopping-oriented. DeltaOne Posted August 2, 2012 #8 Share Posted August 2, 2012 Does RC have port talks on the ship the night before the next port to discuss the next port? Sometimes. A few weeks ago on the Enchantment for the Bermuda, Boston, Newport itinerary a husband and wife team gave an hour long presentation on Boston and Newport. It was good and held in the main theater. Good to know, I've only done the Caribbean so far and that is the shopping scam talk.
BillB48 Posted August 2, 2012 #10 Share Posted August 2, 2012 The last "Caribbean" cruise we had legitimate port lectures real, was on the Jewel with an 11 day Ultimate Caribbean which included Cartagena, Costa Rica and Colon. Have seen them on the 7 day Caribbean cruises. By the way, I thought everyone liked to know where the best deals are;):D!
