Celebrity Century - 1st time X cruiser

Hi. We're first time X cruisers....looking forward to our Hawaii cruise in a couple of months! :)

We have a CC cabin booked....got a decent deal for a special that was being offered, happy about that. We will be Elite on X, we are Diamond on RCCL. Looking forward to some of the Elite perks I've read about here on CC - internet minutes, laundry, etc. :D

I have a question for anyone that has sailed on Century - did you enjoy the food in the buffet? We much prefer the laid back, dine as you please feeling of the buffet, compared to the MDR, where dinner can take a couple of hours or more. :o I've read about the Elite breakfast here, and can't wait to get some specialty coffee and even a bloody mary! ;)

But, how were lunch and dinner in the buffet? Did you enjoy it? Also, does the MDR offer the salad bar as RCCL does in the MDR on sea days?

Also, if anyone has stayed in cabin 1137, any pics and/or insight you can give me on this cabin? I don't know anything about the X cabins, so just went in blindly when I chose this one....

Thanks!

CHEERS!

You should try the Aqua Spa cafe for lunch on Century. It is healthy and the food is fresh. There is no extra charge. When we ate in Select dining on Equinox (it is available on all Celebrity ships), we were in a hurry one night and we told the waiter. We were done, without dessert in 30 mins!. Great service. Sorry I can't remember what we thought of the buffet on Century as it was 6 years ago. However, we have never had an issue with the buffet food on any Celebrity ship. HTH.

Yes, the Elite breakfast is great. So, is the evening bash at 5 - 7PM.

Thanks for your input....we will definitely try the Aqua Spa Cafe for lunch....I didn't even realize they had another venue for dining.....guess I should do some looking at the deck plans! ;)

We cruised the Century in October San Diego to Hawaii and return...15 days with 10 sea days..... Great cruise, Great ship.

As for the Buffet......lunch buffet, well it was an ok buffet what I expected, nothing fancy but more than adequate. They do have stations such as pasta, sushi, deli, oriental towards the fantail that offers some differ types of meals. Dinner buffet was attended primarily by people who wanted something more casual, missed their original seating, or did not want to get dressed up for formal night. There was a $3 cover charge for eating dinner here..not certan if this is still the case. Most meals from the MDR were servered in the buffet but not all.

Elite Breakfeast is no more than Loxs, salmon, and capers, yogurt, some cold cuts, variety of buns and pastry. Capicunos, Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice, and Bloody Marys are available for the asking. If you want something cooked to order you need to go to the main dining room or the omlet station in the Buffet line!!!

There is NO salad bar in the MDR on any of the Celebrity ships (only at the buffet)...but you can ask your waiter for 2-3 salads..different types if thats what you want.

They will offer, on a sea day, in the main dining room (10-2) a Grand Brunch.....quite elaborate (Ice sculptures the whole bit) with all type of meats and a salad bar where you can make your own salad.

We were on Century in 1134 in May to Alaska. Loved the cabin and our Butler Gene was fantastic. What was good was that, as half the balcony was uncovered, we seemed to get the sun on it no matter which way the ship was sailing.

Have a great time.

Thank you for link to your pix! She looks like she's in good shape and the cabin looks roomy enough for the 2 of us!

Did you eat in the buffet at all? Did you have a $3.00 surcharge for the dinner that you know of?

Thanks again! :)

I love the Century. I have some favorites at the buffet. Very aft in the buffet at breakfast is made to order eggs benedict, they have several variations, my favorite is traditional and cornedbeef hash. At lunch and dinner I love the pasta bar, they switch up the components each day. I also usually find some bread and cheese to munch on in the afternoon. I have never been charged a $3 fee in the buffet.

Also, don't miss the Cova Cafe on deck 6, they have goodies there throughout the day. And if you like coffee drinks try an Aspen, very yummy.

Betty Cruiser, thanks for the info! I did read here about the eggs benedict.....one of my faves so I'll be sure to check it out! I think hubby would love the corned beef hash type. Will definitely check out Cova Cafe too....have also read here about the Aspen coffee......CC is full of good info! ;) :D

Expat, would love to try a Sky Suite some time.....

Hi,:) I have sailed Century 6 times...she is older (so am I)LOL she is

one of my favorites......she is definitely smallere than the new S class

ships and does not have all the bells and whistles. Personally, I still

love her.

As for 3.00 at the buffet? Years and years ago Celebrity used to have

something called "Casual Dining" which was located up at the buffet

but you were served by wait staff in training off a limited menu.

They used to "request" a 2.00 gratuity.....this option has since

been eliminated (a few years ago).

The last time I was on Century was May 2010 and there was not

a 3.00 charge for anything up at the buffet.

Hope you have a wonderful time:)

Thank you Lois R!

I am looking forward to sailing her and experiencing her 'charm'.....and X for the first time! :)

Just so you know, the dinner buffet is much more limited than breakfast

and lunch.

They do offer sushi, pizza, pasta, stir fry and there might be a

carving station. But it is smaller than the other 2 meals.

You can also order from the main dining room menu via room service.

And I definitely agree about the Aqua Spa Cafe...give it a try. In

my opinion the food is very good in there.:)

Hi Lois:

I just booked my first cruise on the Century yesterday. It was a Happy Hours special, so the pricing helped to offset the fact that I will be cruising solo.

Do you know if the Thalassotherapy pool is still available on the Century, or was it removed during the 2006 retrofit? I've been searching, but can't seem to find anything definite.

Thanks!

Sharon, I have to be honest here...................we hit the corned beef hash (I love HP sauce on it too) and the Eggs Benedict station for DH, also the waffles before we go to the Elite breakfast for our cappuccinos and sticky buns, almond croissants or what have you! Enjoy your cruise.

Hi Lois...thanks for your reply. :)

Too bad about the T-pool. I loved the t-pool on the Mercury, and was hoping it would be the same on Century. What was put in in place of the T-pool on Century?

I got a great bargain on the 10-day Pacific Wine Cruise from Vancouver to San Diego (September 25, 2012). I have done the itinerary before and really loved it. The big King Tut exhibit will be in Seattle, so I'll be able to see that as well.

I love cruising solo, and am perfectly happy in an inside room, if it means I can squeeze in one more cruise. And only having one 2-1/2 hour direct flight home from San Diego is icing on the cake!

Thanks again for your reply, and hope to meet you on the Cruise Critic cruise that Andy is setting up.

YVR Cruiser...thank you too!!

I did that cruise in May 2010....but in the opposite direction.

Left from San Diego and ended in Vancouver. It is a great

itinerary:)

What replaced the pool? The Aqua Spa Cafe.......

We sailed on Century twice earlier this year and had a fabulous time. Such a lovely ship, and such lovely staff. We only ate in the buffet one night when we just did not want to eat very much. They did not charge us, and it was quite nice, but was a more limited selection compared to lunch (but still plenty to choose from).

I liked the buffet at lunchtime, plemty to choose from and lots of seats as well. We enjoyed the pasta and the stir fry stations, where they make your meal up with the fresh ingredients that you choose. I know my husband enjoyed the eggs benedict station and omelette station for breakfast. The waffles are yummy too!

I would often have my breakast in the Aqua Spa Cafe, and Bill would go and get his food from the buffet and then join me.

We fell in love with the Murano speciality restaurant. I could not say enough good things about the venue, the food and the staff.

I did the Hawaii cruise in April. I'm also a Royal cruiser (Diamond)

The buffet on Century was not very good. I think the buffets on Royal ships are better than X ships and there is no Tutti salad bar on sea days, which is something I really missed. I'm being totally honest when I tell you that the only lunch I find edible on Celebrity cruises are the hot dogs and fries at the pool grill. Great hot dogs, but am I cruising to eat hot dogs for lunch?

The breakfast at the buffet was so-so. If you like waffles, they do make them fresh. The breakfast pastries on Celebrity are dry and tasteless (this was my impression on several X ships) Even their "famous" sticky buns are dry under the goo. They really need to change their corporate recipe. I missed the wonderful fruit bread that Royal ships have at breakfast.

As for dinner at the buffet, well, it won't be like Royal where there are several dishes offered at Windjammer that are on the MDR menu.

The MDR on Celebrity is good. Many of the dishes are much better than Royal offers and I think the presentation is better as well as variety.

Neither line is particularly good at dessert.

Of course food is a highly subjective topic. I think the Elite perks are much better than Diamond perks, mostly because there is only one "top" tier not like on RCI where Diamond status is just barely recognized.

Service on both ships is equally as good, the corporate culture being the same. The non-smoking policy on X is awesome. I wish RCI would follow suit.

You may like the lotions and shampoos, too, though I can always get hand lotion on RCI by just asking for it and I bring my own body wash and shampoo as I have sensitive skin.

We sail either line for itinerary. There are times when Celebrity is quite a bit cheaper for the same itinerary than Royal is.

Thank you all for your responses and your input! I appreciate it!

Kellie, is there smoking allowed in the casino on X ships? We are not smokers and really don't visit the casino much on RCCL because of the smoke....you can hardly breathe! Our last cruise on RCCL - Explorer I discovered a bread in the Cafe Promenade at breakfast that was awesome! I hope they have it on Mariner next year! The Elite perks do look a lot better than RCCL - drinks in the evening, internet minutes, laundry, etc....can't wait! Thanks for your posting your views. :)

The $3 charge is for the old Casual dining that Celebrity had on their ships. This no longer exists, the buffet is free.

Celebrity has never been known for their dinner buffets, it is not as extensive as you would get for breakfast or lunch. It basically consists of stations such as sushi, pizza, etc. You will not starve but most who do not know this are disappointed. Aqua Spa cafe is usually not open for dinner.

Totally non- smoking on Celebrity ships indoors as of a few months ago...
